It is a service like Xbox Live but you buy your games through the software. You have Friends list, message boards, achievements, etc....
What makes it popular in my opinion is the prices are unbeatable they have major sells which are great and a wide variety of games.

Try it you will love it. I haven't been on there because my job been making me busy but most def I will be buying some new games.
there's also free games and demo's on Steam. they'll also let you play games for a 'free weekend' from time-to-time. sometimes it's actually the newest COD and such
