It wasn’t rare at all. High draft picks used to set the market for free agents. Before the 1995 NBA lockout, rookies used to sign huge contracts. Most would have outs after a couple of years to get a bigger contract.

Yes, the 1995 NBA lockout :dahell:

The rookie scale and contracts were introduced after that lockout and 1995 draft picks had to sign under those terms. You should look it up (you will but probably won't return to this point).
