Yet you still trying to ignore the fact that Cutter specifically, blatantly said it's real. Also dismiss the fact that Johnathan Nolan in an interview which I have posted in this thread directly stated their intentions of bringing in science fiction into the picture therefore the whole reason for the Cutter scene at the early part of the film was just to ESTABLISH the fact that they're going to go supernatural.

It's just some of the reasoning be
- it didnt work
- it worked - teleported duplicate left origanal
- it worked - teleported original left duplicated
- it worked with 2 & 3 happening arbitrarily

I thought about where the duplicate ended up and i've came to the conclusion that know one can ever really know for sure.
Like we've agreed upon earlier, the duplicate shares the exact memories and past of the original up until the point of creation. Meaning...
1. The last memory of the Angier that is transported is him initiating the machine and probably the electricity hitting him or whatever.
2. The last memory of the Angier still in the machine is exactly the same as the one being transported
So not even Angier that survives can be sure if he was transported or not. Sure it may be more likely that the duplicate was transported, but its impossible to know. So each time Angier performed the trick he couldn't be sure if he would be the one in the tank or the one to take the glory. A 50/50 chance each time from his perspective.

I know that line. but my take is Angier is saying that just to convince himself. Every night he is literally, physically and emotionally committing suicide. I thing he knows which is the duplicate but he makes the ultimate sacrifice and is trying to convince himself. The machine works the same every time ... or maybe Angier is saying that because he doesnt know which is the duplicate and which is the original.
Thats it... the machine works the same evrye time its used but Angier just doesnt know what that is. so then technically he doesnt know if he is the man in the box or the prestige...

I get the a lot can be taken from the movie

I watched again recently as well. Girl I was talking to had never seen it. After watching again, the machine definitely worked in the movie sense IMO.
In regards to Angier and the clone and who lived and who died here is the conclusion I have come to for myself, not saying this is definitely correct but how I see it.
With the hat being cloned it was hard to tell which was the original and which the clone. But unless I'm mistaken they measure each hat against the original that was originally set in the machine. Meaning IMO all the clones were located outside and the original remained inside where the machine was, at least that is how they saw it.
With the cat, once they thought they failed, the cat inside the machine made no reaction or behaved in a "startled" way like the cat outside did when Angier came across it. Which also leads me to believe the cat inside the machine was the original and thus aware of its environment and people around thus no reason to act any different.
Which leads me to believe the original Angier died when he first used the machine. The clone startled at what had just happened grabbed the gun and shot the original. Also if we watch when Angier uses the machine for the final time, the person in the machine is the person that falls into the trapdoor and into the closed water tank. Which makes it even more amazing to me, the Angier that performed the trick knew that when the trick was performed it would be his demise and the clone would live on. That is a hell of a sacrifice for the sake of a trick.
Again I am not saying all of this with 100% certainty but the conclusion I have come up with and settled on in relation to the movie.

i watched the movie just now off the strength of this thread. I really appreciate it brehs b/c I thoroughly enjoyed it. so much so I cannot wait to watch again. the machine definitely didn't work. the fact that Tesla's assistant was such an enthusiastic fan of magic and appeared to admire Angier was a big red flag for me. he would not be able to resist assisting in a magic "trick" that would fool one of the greatest magicians in London. another red flag... the assistant appeared to be attached to the cat.. it was his pet right? why did the cat not have a name? "you are responsible for what happens to this animal" then after the machine is finished the cat prances off like the stray that it was heading towards the cat nip strategically placed around the hats. hats that closely resembled the hat Angier wore throughout... w/ch would be familiar to someone who caught at least 7 of his London shows.
excellent excellent excellent movie. I'm going to watch Momento again. I was high as fukk the only time I watched it and wasn't that impressed. I now have a feeling I did myself a disservice by not watching it clear headed. Nolan just might be a genius....
