Black politics is something you don't understand because you make statements like this
Nap is absolutely right (Never thought I would utter those words) on this.
Even when affirmative action policies were passed in a much more receptive environment immediately following the civil rights movement, those policies had to be broadened to win support.
The way some people talk of the black only policies is as if we live in a different reality.
We live in a racially tense society where programs that help ALL poor and disenfranchised people are constantly under attack because racists believe they take money from hardworking whites and give it to undeserving blacks.
Given the reality of this kind of society, why do certain people feel like they can politicians can pass policies that only help black people.
I’m not opposed to programs that help black people specifically, I just think they are highly unlikely to the point of being impossible.
@hashmander you nailed it.
Correct. I'm backing you up, but snidely telling posters to look into why the amendment passed despite Gillum's electoral outcome.
Another example would be Cory Booker's "opportunity accounts." It's targeted at helping poor kids and who happens to be disproportionately poor? It's not that it wouldn't help poor whites, but it would help blacks and other minorities.
Obviously, nothing will come of this, but it's worded in a way where bigots won't reflexively shoot it down (Republicans hate all poor people reflexively shoots it down).
Negative. I want blacks to push for reparations for the descendants of slaves, everything else(in my opinion) is anesthetic.
Op ain't wrong
Every member of the House of Representatives represents 710,767 people according to the 2010 census.
There according to the 2010 census thats 43,646,369 black people.
OK...well if you manage to evenly spread out the number of black representatives more or less comes out to ~61 representatives
Theres 435 members of the House of Representatives.
Thats 14% of the House of Representatives.
So even if you get 100% of your representatives on board, you need to convince ALL THE OTHER DEMOCRATS...and even then...all the other republicans.
Where is this platform of "black only politics" taking place?
Thats why you need smarter policy that indirectly targets us in order to even make it past other legislators on your own team AND the courts when its eventually tested.
