I'm out the loop. Here's for the other people who are also out the loop:
The second apron is a financial threshold that triggers additional penalties for teams that spend above it. It's the final spending limit before teams face severe penalties that can affect their ability to compete. The second apron was introduced in the NBA's 2023-24 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to make penalties more severe for teams that spend much more than the luxury tax. The goal is to reduce the gap between big-spending teams and small-market teams when it comes to roster building.
I wonder why creative owners haven’t circumvented stuff like this. Like if the Arabs start liking basketball, they’d get someone to take a pay cut and give them an endorsement gig with Emirates or Qatar airways to make up for the salary shortfall.

Is that illegal according to the cba?

My Pops Forever RIP
I think most the complaints people had were superteams forming thru FA, seems they wanted teams to focus on building thru the draft/homegrown talent and making competitive teams. Seems the 2nd apron is punishing that. This is on the owners trying to save money, not fans. Idk how they let the low tier/trash orgs push this through. Most of them either lacked foresight(doubtful) or they just saw the money that would be saved(most likely). Most who voted for it probably thought "we not gonna ever have a team good enough to worry about that, but we gonna save a lot".
Teams just hated going into a season where they had no chance to compete and then being criticized for tanking.

i don’t know how the aprons cause owners to save money though. Celtics were out here paying damn near half a Billy in lux tax costs. Teams in the first apron still pay taxes. All the aprons did was kill free agency, but let most of these teams tell it, that route wasn’t a viable option.

I just want fans to be honest about the talent pool being shallow. If it wasn’t, trying to find new cheaper role guys shouldn’t be that hard.

People never cared about parity or had a problem with superteams. They had a problem with the superteams (more specifically the players) that were running shyt.
The Heatles and KD warriors would like a word with you

The second apron exists bc the other owners were pissed bc the Warriors & to a lesser extent Clippers were the eating the repeater tax penalties they put into the last CBA, and when the Warriors won the title again in ‘22 that was the last straw
Which is ironic considering some of those same owners are now getting a taste of post season runs, but are now going to have to break up their team eventually due to a problem they created.

Majority of owners in sports are notoriously cheap

Im fine with it just need to be adjusted a bit, maybe not as strict like losing your picks because you're in it. It promotes proper team building and gming.

They better opt-out after the 28-29 season and do something about them aprons.

Luxury tax money goes to the League (Half) and the other half goes to the owners who stayed under the luxury tax threshold😂🤣 ridiculous.

Teams that drafted well shouldn’t be penalized for drafting well.
