That's really sad. Not on your part, but the students that fall for it. I didn't know there were a lot of Asians and Africans doing this. Would've thought the international representation would be minimal.

Paying for a PHD. That's insane.

Its actually not that bad. Some companies that do tuition reimbursement pay for the degrees on behalf of their students..Lots of companies have articulation agreements with these online schools..and ive seen some African and Asian governments pay for their government workers to get these degrees to..Its really not that bad, especially on the international front. I got my degree from a traditional institution and my fulltime job is a traditional school..But theres alot of value in this online shyt if you know how to play it right as a person with a PhD..All these mothafukkas who come out of school without a job, some of whom were in my PhD cohort, have no hustle in them..Its plenty jobs out there for PhDs, just got to know where to look and humble thyself..The online schools are a great supplemental income for anyone with a PhD.

yes breh thats the move...Teach at the CC, get the experience, then see if they got some online sections available to teach..then once you have that on your resume theres a bunch of websites you can go to that are strictly for online adjunct instructor teaching...its the new wave breh I literally go to the beach with my labtop, grade a few assignments, and watch that side money roll in that Friday:wow:

gotcha so I assume its harder to get straight into Online Courses?

Yea it is, especially with no teaching experience because these online schools get 1000's of applications, especially with people with master's degree..So either having a PhD or prior teaching experience, especially online will put you over the top.

gotcha. I actually do want to get into teaching, but I felt this would be a good way to strengthen my resume, along with my private sector work experience to get into a decent State School PhD program.

Breh, take it from me..Teaching at the college level is some of the easiest work ive ever done, especially online teaching..Earn a full salary and dont have to worry about being in some decrepit office from 9 - 7... Summers off if you like..and if you teach summer its extra dough..Its especially great if you trying to start a family for these reasons..Im close to 6 figures between all the teaching jobs that I have and I dont have to do to much compared to what I did in the private sector..I definitely encourage you to go ahead and get the PhD..Yea your life will suck for 4 - 5 years but the rewards are great afterwards.

You know the funny thing about education and degrees is that people only talk about the doors it opens for you...

But they never talk about the doors it closes for you...

You get an advanced degree...

Then it's likely you only going to be able to get an 'advanced" job...

So you had better walk through those 1 or 2 doors that open up for you when you get something past a bachelors...

Because you going to have a 100 doors close behind you with a sign on them that says "sorry you are going to want to much money to work this job" and "sorry but you will just leave as soon as you find something that you can use your degree for"

But do these PHD programs make your students employable? Seriously asking right now. Do you know if any of your PHD students ever found respectable employment?

Another dumb thread trying to discourage black people, the least educated demographic group, and in turn least amount of PhDs, from pursuing Ph.Ds
Who is reading either this article or this thread, that will be discouraged from pursuing a PhD?
If you were thinking about pursuing one before, this isn't too likely to stop you.

I don't understand how you know that

But aside from that, a culture and notions aren't spread by a single article, but either you are contributing to an existing anti academic culture or you are helping to reduce it

Overall the problem is the absurdity and disconnect from reality for one of the least educated demographic groups to be making this a topic, black people need more Ph.Ds as a matter of self preservation, it's way deeper than getting a job

Women and gender studies. Research areas are in critical race theory, black Canadian studies, media studies, cultural studies and diaspora studies

I'm looking at mass mediated representations of black masculinity and the criminalization of black bodies from a feminist framework.
There are quite a few of you (mass media rep. and critical race study MAs/PhDs at Columbia, Princeton and NYU.
I assume you're going into academia?
After spending some time with bell hooks and Nicholas Mirzeoff, I worry that there is a limit to how deep the studies can go. Diaspora studies are incredibly underwhelming, just because so much of the foundational bodies of work are so weak.
I'd love to read some of your writings in the area, though.
