I'm 30, a grown man dog. I don't care if I sound old or not. I'm not gonna act like I like newer music to fit in with the younger generation. I'm not trying to. I heard all of their songs, I'm very familiar with their material. They just aren't near Diplomats when it comes to quality music.

I give credit where credit is due, I just don't see them being dope like you do. All subjective.

I feel you, the music isn't for everyone.

I just give credit where credit is due, outside of sound. I just think people underestimate them, when if you think about it.. how they established themselves is smart. they thought about it on a national level, they used their image and brand to appeal to females, and their beats and shyt to "hipsters" and foreigners and shyt and establish a dedicated fanbase..instead of say someone like troy ave whos just thinking about it on a local level and poppin on the streets.. street rappers like that don't sell like they used to or nothing like that. i doubt dipset even in their peak was sellin out shows over seas..

but because ASAP built their brand and shyt to appeal to hipster, they very well could drop an album that could very much well be considered a dope ass "street album" and do decent sales wise and still sell out shows just based off their brand over seas and it wouldn't even be a loss lol

Thing that these Internet dudes and outta towners and sheltered NYU students dont understand is. Gentrification aint affecting THE HOOD. Maybe Manhattan and where white people live. But the hood is pretty much untouched. New York street rap is still ALIVE and well. The problem is, we are now in the internet era, where almost all of these dudes arent "trendy" enough for ya to be dikkriding.

This is Harlem

This Brooklyn

This is the Bronx

This is Queenz

All in 2012-2013

So KILL that noise about the "streets" is gone.

Are NY rappers even grinding like that?

I bet most of the legitimate contenders coming out NY, just lack hunger. No reason new artists are not coming out every year.

Some of the music just sounds uninspired.

Chicago, Cali, and Philly output has been good.

they are, but NY rappers are slowly building themselves and establishing dedicated fanbases..they're just makin moves differently. establishing and building a dedicated fanbase > someone like french montana whos been in the game for years and music plays in clubs, doesn't have a dedicated fanbase, album bricked and is constantly releasing singles with a million other typical features as promo for a free mixtape cause diddy realize puttin money into him like that is a waste of money

that's why its funny when people say the souths sound is running thing.. migos, gucci, 2 chainz, rich homie quan.. yeah, their songs might be gettin played in the club, and people more into music like that will download their music.. but those type of artists dont have a dedicated fanbase like that and dont market themselves well enough to do anything outside of gettin bumped in the club and cars and playin little club shows in the U.S..

The South is running the airways and that won't change anytime soon. There music has a lot of universal appeal, because it entertains without demanding anything from the listener.

"I know you feel some type of way..." or "I hope this never ends..." is catchy, so it keeps the people entertained and probably keeps hip-hop from dying in the mainstream. As much as I love Joe Budden's verse on Hammer Dance, no one is trying to hear that.

But that doesn't bother me, because the machine & the establishment thought they could control the culture.

This is what I feared the most.

But so many of the rappers who are buzzing are deciding to stay unsigned. The hustler's spirit which created this music is alive and well.

I don't think any rapper went multi-platinum since 2010, not Drake, Wayne or Jay-Z. Looks like not even Eminem will go multi-platinum.

As long as you can do shows, even 5k a show, it can mean 20k/week or 100k/month. Rappers will hit the booth with a goal in mind, and since they can only fail themselves it makes them grind harder.

Social network/youtube/worldstar really took things to a whole other level, because the power is back in the hands of the people, the way it should be.

like that mixtape right? pro era dropped a much better group effort than them, but as solo artists i think both rocky & ferg have dropped very good albums. french montana is relevant imo, action bronson has some bangers too. joey's joint is getting radio play now, nicki minaj is still very much relevant as well. and we can't forget sean carter.. so why all this talk about new york not doing anything?
im specifically talking about street rappers from this generation

NY aint nothing sweet. shyt even Rocky himself had a wild life. His brother got shot, he was homeless etc. Rocky probably had it rougher than the same people in this thread criticizing him.

The problem with NY aint the streets. Its the rappers. These new young hood nikkas gotta find a way to connect with the people OUTSIDE the hood. Reason why Rocky blew is not because he is some super skilled lyrcist. Its because he has APPEAL. Something that alot of these new NY nikkas simlpy DO NOT have.

We are now in a era where fans wanna feel like they can RELATE to the artist. Thus we have these weirdo nikkas like Chance, Tyler, etc. Cuz they are relatable to a wide spectrum of individuals. Most of these street NY cats are mentally stuck in their hood. No way are labels gonna sign em its a waste of money.

You need to be a artist that White girls from the suburbs (such as yaself lol) will go crazy for. Thats why Drake, J.cole, Kendrick n em be winning.

Its funny cuz I personally know a few NY rap nikkas who can hit global status cuz they can appeal to both the hood and the burbs. But like someone in this thread already said. They simply lack the hunger and the effort to go all the way thru with it.

Let me clarify...But so many of the rappers from Cali, Chicago, Philly who are buzzing are deciding to stay unsigned instead of taking those garbage 360 deals.
