While I appreciate her attempt at somewhat fixing the system, it doesn't address the root cause of the problem. The main problem is there are too many damn colleges. The number of jobs are limited especially limited if you're majoring in something like history, art, etc. It's disingenuous to charge students 30k or more a year for a degree that at most will land them a job paying 30k. On top of that, if you're not going to a feeder school that employers actively recruit at you're double screwing yourself.

You can't put the sole blame on the kids. They're force fed from our public education system that you go to college and you will get a job. Well the reality is not every college is equal. Colleges are most concerned with bringing in money and paying high salaries to the deans/administrators and "respected" teachers.

There should be more apprenticeship and applied trade opportunities for young people. Not everyone wants to be a doctor, laywer, etc.

I'm even for allowing corporations to somewhat game the system tax wise if they invest in poor k-12 schools. The recent Burger King news merging with Tim Hortons for favorable tax treatment in Canada shows corporations are looking for ways to save money. Why not let them stay based here in the states and save on taxes, but also invest in our schools?

It's no secret that public schools in affluent areas still raise money from parents in the children. Those parents give money because their kids go there. Those parents have no incentive to give money to poor schools. However, if you make it favorable for corporations and wealthy citizens to give to poor schools things will change.

Did you stay on campus with a meal plan or did you commute and cook for yourself?

Lived on campus first year, commuted the rest. Never did the meal plans. My commute was only 20 min so it wasn't bad. Took a few night classes and online classes my last two years so I could work during the day.

Did you pay rent? What was your diet like? .... I ask these questions because more than likely you were subsidized by your family...

You more than likely lived with family and was given a car, gas money, and home cooked food....this allowed you to skirt the trappings of the student loan merry go round... You were able to focus on your 2 jobs and pay off your student loans because you had a support system... Good for you... you were in a position to create a more frugal financial plan for yourself...

Not everyone who has student loan debt is "lazy, lived above their means, or made poor financial decisions." Your, "If I did it, then you should be able to do it too," "stop whining" mentality allows you to judge others and skew the issues of the predatory student loan market without any guilt...
Hey use your privilege if you have it....

But don't start at the 40m mark in the 100m hurdles and then gloat because you tripped over the last hurdle and still won...

@Kritic you've been awfully salty as of late. Everything ok in the real world? My mom had an ehh job assisting the elderly and my dad had a very good job with Fidelity working on their IS.

I havent eaten at home since I was in high school and got my drivers license. I don't like Russian food and thats all I have here so my diet and spending was all spent on eating out. That was my biggest expense but its my guilty pleasure that if I'm wasting money on something, at least it'll be something really good to put in my body. I payed rent freshmen year(900/mo). Payed $400 a month to live at home. Parents took care of the cell phone bill (50/mo). My car was a hand me down from my parents so it was free. Not the best car but it got me from point a to point b. Your meal plan at school over 4 years would only add 1 year to your loan payments. The killer definitely is housing and I'll give you that. I saved by living at home versus school and I get not everyone can do that so yeah I had some help. Sorry that my household is intact and my parents have their shyt together? Don't know what to say about that but there are still alternatives for those that can't live at home while attending college. You can either bunk up and split the rent in more ways to lower each persons contribution, or you add 2-3 years to your loan payments. You're just going to dismiss it as I had help so my story is bullshyt and inapplicable to the average person but I'll say thats a cop out. Most people just don't want to deal with reality and want to live that carefree college life. Again, if you can't afford something, its your choice on how you handle it and its your responsibility to deal with those consequences.
