You mention Self Destruction as if BDP first album wasn't on some high key gangster shyt. There was plenty of gangster music in the mid to late 80's. "9mm Goes Bang" influenced Spice 1, one of the most prolific gangster rappers of all time, to try to recreate that song his entire career. And if we're honest, NWA was blatantly influenced by BDP from their whole all black everything look to their unremorseful vulgar approach to Rap music. And Ice T was on that gangster shyt too. And as far as underground shyt goes, undergrond West Coast shyt was always more raw and street oriented in the late 80's.
I know being from the Bay. Hugh EMC and 415 from the Bay were making hard street music for the d boys back in that 89' era. Snoop admittedly was heavily influenced by 415 and Richie Rich and even rapped on some of the same beats (i.e. "G'z and Hustlaz" is that same beat as "Snitches and bytches"). Maybe d boys on the East Coast were listening to "Bonita Applebum" and a slanging dope, but West Coast rap already had trap music before they called it that by the late 80's.
