it was the first single that came out. it premiered at a live show 2 months before and everyone was buzzing big waiting for it to drop. Also hit #1 on the charts before icantfeelmyface

Show me a citation that proves that.

"Can't Feel My Face" was the first Weeknd song to hit #1. "The Hills" came and knocked it out of the #1 spot a few weeks later:

The Hills" was a critical success, appearing on several year-end lists. In the singer's native Canada, the song peaked at number 1. In the United States, where it was asleeper hit, it also reached number 1 on the BillboardHot 100, replacing his own "Can't Feel My Face", which was released later (only the second artist on the chart to do so, after Rihanna).

After three weeks at number two, "Can't Feel My Face" ascended to number one on the Hot 100, replacing OMI's "Cheerleader" and becoming The Weeknd's first number-one single on that chart. It has spent three non-consecutive weeks in three separate runs at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the sixth song to achieve this feat, and the first song to do so sinceBruno Mars's "Grenade" in 2011. In its third week at number one, "The Hills" reached number two, becoming the first act since The Black Eyed Peas to attain the top two positions on the Hot 100 as a lead artist.[18]The following week, "The Hills" topped the chart, making The Weeknd the first artist since Taylor Swift to replace themselves at the top spot; "Can't Feel My Face" fell to number three. It spent nineteen weeks in the chart's top ten before dropping out on November 21, 2015. As of December 2015, it has sold 2,171,608 copies in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can't_Feel_My_Face#cite_note-us_sales-19

:mjlol: look at this coli A&R

If dude did traditional R&B instead of that abstract shyt he's doing now he would be platinum by now. Dude has the voice to be big in R&B but he's stuck on abstract music and videos that stoners and weirdo's seem to gravitate to. He's got the vocals but he'll never move major units as long as he's on that weird shyt. He has a niche but like all niche genre's you only get a small fraction of the market share.

it took ariana grande the 50 shades of grey soundtrack and max martin and the other professional pens for bro to break through

they took the different production dark aesthetic and cooked up some dirty pop music
on his own abel would have paralleled the cycles of a dope fiend musically
meandering rambling through the highs and lows til he burnt out and got repetitive lyrically/thematically

the machine saved bro and he's making good on their investment

You guys are clueless :mjlol: The Weeknd sold out the O2 Arena in London before ALL of that. 20,000 capacity. Only a handfull artists have managed that.
He he got those soundtracks etc because he built up a ridiculous fanbase off the quality of his early work

there's a difference between artist with a strong cult following and popstar territory
he'd never enter popstar territory without the machine and company pens polishing his raw work

the key term was break through
