RIP China of Cam & China. A generationally great bar-for-bar rapper. The West Coast heir to the throne of Rage & Yo-Yo. A virtuosic Category 5 force w/ inimitable confidence, swagger & mic command. But who also had hooks, gorgeous melodies & who obliterated every beat every time.

I profiled the twins in 2015 for the unnamed dead alt-weekly & am re-upping it here because losing China is a legit tragedy. One of the kindest, most sincere & talented artists that I've met. A huge loss for the city. My deepest condolences to her family.

You might remember Cam and China best from the Pink Dollaz days. No one should be able to rap that well at 16. Yo-Yo & Lady of Rage are the most obvious comparisons, but you can hear the spirit of Trina and Gangsta Boo too. Legends in their own time.

There is an alternate, better reality where music executives recognized Cam & China's genius, handed them millions and got out of the way. It never happened and the industry did what the industry does, but the music they left behind is raw & timeless.
