Call immigration and "invasion" or protests a "rebellion" and you can lock up anyone, anytime, for any reason.

It's the right of due process when you are accused of wrong doing by the state. As in if you are charged with a crime, the state has to prove it's case against you in a court of law.

I am! There is a fascinating book by Gerald Horne called the Counter Revolution of 1776 that has the Somerset decision at the heart of the American so called independence movement. Fears over England ending slavery was a less publicly known motivation to pursue independence, especially in the Southern colonies such as Virginia and South Carolina. Kinda crazy how Massachusetts put in the most work for so called Independence but it was Virginia that shaped the early direction of the country due to the wealth it had accrued during to chattel slavery.

It's been suspended four times. During the Civil War, during Reconstruction (to combat the KKK), during a Philippines uprising (after the US annexed the country), and during Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack.

Compare those examples to now and it's clear there is no logical reason to lift it. And I don't think it's a coincidence that this is happening within a few weeks of the country really getting aggressive in forcing the administration to stop detaining people without hearings.

This theory is also a central part of the 1619 project. One of the reasons could conservatives wanted to ban it so badly.
