Quen is the protective lightning one. If you wanna not get raped early i suggest you put points into it. Witcher 2 is really hard in the beginning and a cakewalk at the end, really that's the game's only flaw, stupid difficulty flow.yep, I learned the dodge roll quick, when I was beating on some dude with a shield... and nothing was happening

the thing that's kinda overwhelming at the moment is all the loot. should I be picking up all this leather, cloth, herbs, rocks, and other random crap?

Definitely keep herbs breh, alchemy is dope and makes the game much easier. I deposit leathers and iron all that junk at the innkeeper for making swords and crap later.
What's Witcher 2 like? Is the story good at all?

Part 2 was very good but not classic like the first witcher...
I recommend this franchise if you're into game like skyrim...

Story is really good, multi layered with shades of gray
Witcher 2 is great. The story is amazing and you basically get 2 games in one. You make one choice in chapter one and it leads you down path 1 which is completely different than the path you get if you make the other choice.
