5. Michigan
> Pct. residents black: 13.9% (15th highest)
> Black homeownership rate: 40.8% (16th highest)
> Black incarceration rate: 1,682 per 100,000 (15th highest)
> Black unemployment rate: 11.6% (6th highest)

Based on social and economic gaps between black and white residents, few states are worse for African Americans than Michigan. Gross segregation and inequalities in the Detroit metro area contribute to the state’s poor ranking. By using race to determine home loan eligibility, the FHA deliberately segregated the Detroit area over the course of the mid-20th century. To this day, a wall built in 1940 along 8 Mile Road to separate white and black neighborhoods serves as a reminder of the area’s history of segregation. The wall no longer separates black and white residents, but the city remains one of the most segregated in the country.
Across Michigan, black residents are considerably more likely than white residents to live in poverty. Close to 33% of black people in the state live in poverty versus less than 12% of whites.

They never lied. Detroit is just a sad state of affairs when you think about. So many abandoned homes and very few good neighborhoods to live in. If you do find a good neighborhood you will have about 2-3 nice houses and then a abandoned home right next to them. Then for the people that live downtown Dan Gilbert & Co. basically drove the people out of their homes by drive the rent prices up forcing them to move. I already spoke about the rent prices in Detroit so I'm not going there. Mike Duggan is worried more about fixing downtown instead of doing something with the neighborhoods in Detroit. Then you got governor that has done nothing but made cuts across the board ever since he's been in office. Then there's the water poison crisis in Flint that the politicians are getting away with.

Then if you're looking for a job in Michigan there really are no jobs in the city of Detroit most of the jobs are outside the city. It makes things no better that "Right To Work" law was passed about four years ago either. If you don't have transportation to get outside the city to go to work then you're fukked. If you do get a vehicle in Michigan you're going to paid at least $900-1000 a month for car insurance along with whatever car note you have to pay. Michigan is just not the place to be if you want to go far in life. If I get an opportunity to leave Michigan to go somewhere else I might take it.

I'm not surprised that Michigan is on the list though I'm just surprised Michigan isn't #1 on the list.

-Flint water crisis
-Lack of jobs in the inner city
-Bad inner city neighborhoods
-Highest car insurance rates in the country

Although from reading the article I'm not surprised that the Midwest is the worst place to live as far as opportunities goes. The South seems cool but I don't know how I would hold up in that summer weather though.
