See the first post on page 1 in which a case is made for why Thelonious Monk was more hiphopthan alot of these so-called rappers. Multiple exhibits are given.

:rudy:

And no, I have never played an instrument before of played Jazz in a band. Why does that matter? :wtb:
I have never been a rapper, yet I like listening to hiphop. I have never been a grafitti-bomber, yet I like watching it. See what I'm doing here?

Thanks for answering my question

Always interesting to see the thoughts of jazz fans that have never played an instrument

dear jazz brehs, I just can't listen to a jazz song in full. shyt's too busy for me. I think jazz creates some incredible melodies 'in bits' (which makes it ripe for sampling). But to sit there and love the entire piece? nah

Of all the jazz records I've ever come across, there's only ONE I can listen to in full. and even then, it becomes a struggle after 1:35.

^what kind of jazz is this anyway?

I used to be like you breh. shyt just seemed like random noise to me. But one day it'll all make sense. And when it does, you'll never listen to music the same way again. Jazz musicians are easily the most highly skilled musicians on the planet and you'll gain that appreciation one day.

But to start getting into serious jazz (coz George Benson isn't serious jazz in my opinion), start with some of the simpler tunes, like jazz covers of some old songs that you might know.

Like this...

Follow one instrument at a time. Start with the horn. Next listen, follow the drums. Next listen, follow the piano. Etc.

One day it'll all just click and you'll be like :mjcry:
