These news organizations pay their journalists to literally put their life at risk, and sometimes they are indeed put at risk when they're kidnapped and held on ransom. The irony being that the price for the life is far more than the journalist could have ever made. It's pocket change in comparison (see the money the violin case). In the end they're pretty much "played like a fiddle" on both ends. By the news organizations as well as terrorist/insurgent groups, both are more than willing to play with their lives as a mean to a greater end (money).
