We know that some, like the Admiral, David Robinson, have opened up private equity firms. Michael Jordan plays golf and reaps dividends on his shoe and clothing line. Shaq has earned a doctorate degree and has many lucrative deals and ventures. But what about the regular guys that have stayed out of the limelight? You might just be surprised.

Adrian Dantley (pictured) played in the NBA for 15 years and made it to the Hall of Fame. While he was a terror on the ball court, scoring over 23,000 points, he took a much more peaceful path in retirement. Not wanting to spend too much time sitting at home and feeling a need to give back to the community, Dantly earns $14,000 each year keeping kids safe as a school crossing guard.

Though Bryant Reeves had his career cut short by chronic back pain, the six-year pro earned enough to buy a 300-acre Oklahoma cattle ranch. While ranching is hard work, “Big County” Reeve doesn’t forget to take time for himself. Among other luxurious amenities, his 15,000 square-foot home features a full-size basketball court.

Karl Malone is an NBA legend. The Hall of Fame ballplayer. During his career, Malone was an All-Star 14 times and won the MVP award twice; only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has scored more points. What does such a man do when he retires? He hauls wood. Granted, Malone has stakes in many businesses as a financial backer, but he loves to harvest timber, and he makes many of the long-haul drives himself. It is said that he loves the time to be alone and think.

Some of the other jobs you will find NBA retirees doing:

Maceo Bason – gourmet cupcakes.

Dan dikkau – barbershop.

Shandon Anderson – Vegan restaurant.

Mark Blount – Auntie Anne’s pretzel franchisee

Vinne Johnson – pallet manufacturing (owner, CEO)

LaRue Martin – UPS Driver

In short, most NBA players have a relatively short career. Many are sports royalty at the height of their careers, but once they leave the court, most of them return to regular life. In fact, you might just run into them in any business in America.
