Syncretism is heavy in Mexico and all Roman Catholic cultures in Latin America and the Caribbean. Syncretism in the Roman Catholic sense, is the blending Roman Catholic rites and customs with indigenous and ancestral-pagan religious customers and rites and gods. It happens. They have a patron saint for everything in Mexico. Patron saint of smuggling, death, etc. Adding extra “saints” is something that’s common in catholic syncretism in these countries. You see it with vodou in certain Caribbean nations. Slavery, forced conversions, violence, and colonization will do that to a people. If you come with the gun, whips, and chains in one hand and the Bible in the other, instead of coming as just plain old missionaries bringing the gospel, then this is the end result. And it takes a while to be undone.
