You have a consumer base already established, then you use your advertising dollars to focus on the extending that customer base to a new demographic....... its sound business per se, but they fukked up by not realizing the emotional backlash this could potentially cause in this era of easily being offended.....
Business 101 also has "don't alienate your consumers" as the first rule of business.
