Tevin was a great singer for a younger artist, but he was built by great songwriters like Babyface.

Once those Face tracks stopped coming in, his career went down...not to mention he didnt fit the edgy/semi-thug mold of newer acts
Neither did Usher but the difference is Tevin was only good at ballads, once that trackmaster era came in shyt changed. nikkas like Kellz was able to make the transition while Tevin was too stuck in that Quincy Jones mold of artist.

In all honesty, if there was still MONEY in the R&B group as an entity we'd still POSSIBLY have stuff like this.

The death of the R&B group killed any sort of unity for black artists b/c everyone wants to make all the money themselves now. And with the technology, no background singers are needed. Once super talented dudes like Marvin Gaye showed you can do ALL of your own vocals it was a slow process to the end. If you had your own studio you could do it all yourself.

What? Usher transitioned perfectly from beiing a kid in a James Worthy jersey to the "My Way" era where he dressed like a rapper and made more sensual songs like "Nice & Slow"

Tevin just didnt fit that

I think a few things contributed to the downfall of R&B, one was BET falling off. Once BET sold out to Viacom the downfall became more rapid. It used to be a point when videos were played on BET 12-14 hours a day, it went from that to 1 hour a day now. I refuse to believe that the talent is diminished and I refuse to believe that people no longer want to hear it. Even Drake's "Hold On Were Going Home" can show you that people still want that shyt.

Look at the producers they stuck him with for his last album which dropped in '99. He was signed to Qwest and they didn't know how to transition to what was going on. By 99 that nikka should've had a Timbaland beat or at least some shyt from The Trackmasters.

half the singers on that stage were solo artists.

and low-key, the labels stopped messin with groups. dudes like trey songz had to go solo to get deals.

tevin was good at ballads in the early '90s. "round & round" was huge and he had new jack swing hits.

but once the mid-90s hit, i think the ballad beats got a lil too hard for his voice/style.

Black Men United - U Will Know, sadly will never happen again. It was a different conscious and a different state of mind in black men back then. Most importantly the talents that those black men had to sing a tune then is totally different from the ones we got now. Everything today is all about thinking about sex and getting sex. If a song like that came out today who would be the ones signing it? How would it work in today's society? It wouldn't.

I always thought Tevin had the better voice throughout the whole song, then Brian and lastly R. Kelly/Aaron.

It's not impossible, ten years ago who would've taught gangsta rap would be irrelevant in the mainstream and the big rap acts would soft as cotton candy
