It's a slippery slope, breh. Some places will cut off the hand of a thief and exact other punishments that seem wild to the west but those places also have very low crime rates. So one could argue that their society as a whole is safer and therefore more civil overall than America where mass shootings, gangs, bank robberies, etc are common.

You also gotta factor in how much that phone actually means to people abroad. A $300 phone is less than 5% of your monthly income here, but it could easily be %50 to %100 of a monthly income in most nations on earth.

To put that in perspective, for the avg American , it'd be like losing $3000 to $6000 right after leaving the grocery store, all cause some dumb ass wanted to hit a lick. These are amounts that folks routinely kill for in America.
