From that time from 1994-1995 I actually go back and forth with "Illmatic" and "Me Against The World."
this album was released 19 years ago, and it hasn't been topped yet...

Im a west coast head so theres a bunch of albums id rather listen to than illmatic
and because of my west coast bias, Ready to Die is my favourite east coast album ever
but in terms of "authentic new york shyt", there is no finer album to me than cuban linx...i love that album and i will put that over illmatic for 3 reasons
1- it was more street. whereas illmatic was a story from the project kid, it was more so from the gifted kid who watched shyt unfold, whereas cuban linx was being told from the street level not the window
2- the guest appearances from the other wu members
3- consistency of sound: the whole album had that rza sound whereas illmatic had production from a variety of different producers. now i recognize that is in fact one of the key strengths of illmatic and some will point to it as an advantage, but to me cuban linx gets the edge on account of the fact that i get a more clear and consistent narrative and story from the music
