Why did he think this was a good idea?
I've met some standup Black folks in the field who ain't with this shyt at all (like me.) Because you most likely have pride or knowledge of yourself, you'll pass on trash assignments. But remember, you're working in an industry that's 90ish percent white. So that'll probably come at the cost of stunting your trajectory, but you'll also sleep better at night. There are some of us who ain't with the shyts, but kinda play the middle to protect their neck/check. In my experience, this is where the majority fall because you want to keep your gig in a field that's super hard to get into - especially if you don't fit the mold. The whole system is designed to keep us out.
And then there are those who are at bigger shops and/or wanna climb the ladder. That's usually where you run into people who come up with this tripe. They're Blavity/Root/VSB-types who want representation without substance - a seat at the table and a pat on the head from the white neoliberals who run the industry. Or alternatively, it's white neoliberals creating things like this but their only "connection" to us is "Black Twitter", Blavity, etc and that's what they check against for "authenticity."
Man, don't get me started...
