“I saw a black couple celebrating they five year anniversary :scust:. Whats wrong with us?”

You have no way of actually proving that

And who benefits from a black person graduating from medical or law school….

Damn, maybe, just maybe other black people

And again, you reek of insecurity.
  • :scust:I saw a black couple celebrating their baby’s successful/healthy birth.
  • :scust:I saw a black grandmother/grandfather celebrating their 70th birthday.

ex·cel·lence
noun
  1. the quality of being outstanding or extremely good.
    "a center of academic excellence"
Came here to post this. He doesn't even know the meaning of the word excellence. Schools and other institutions give out awards and recognition for excellence all the time and it has zero to do with being the first or only person to do something.

To paraphrase Orlando Jones' character in Drumline: What I like most, is instead of making someone else look bad, he made himself look look like a jackass.

First off that came from Killer Mike of all people so it automatically gets the red flag on the play

If someone is the first one in their family to graduate or start a buisness then yes, in their immediate family they are the first and should celebrate how they feel

You don’t ever minimize your accomplishments as a black man or woman in your day to day to appease some esoteric ass notion that contextually doesn’t make sense.

If you went back in time and told your ancestors who fresh from being property that they’d have descendants who never experienced chattel slavery, had their own home, were doctors, tradesmen, teachers, or business owners they’d be jumping for joy.

A lot of people from killer mike to the bozo in the video don’t really understand how rough it actually is out here for people, and the idea of them celebrating as if it they’re in the wrong is just despicable.

This life is short breh. You get few wins as is, you best believe I’m bigging my people up.

I think you are missing the point.

Its not about 'minimizing your accomplishments'.

It comes down to Cui Bono- Who stands to benefit from a brotha or sister simply boasting about their excellence? Often times (if not always), no one but the boaster.

I've said it before, but the vast majority of folks on that 'Black Excellence' time are only doing it to gloat toward other black folk.

Even Kanye's crazy ass understood this "Just to be like, 'nikka, you ain't up on this'"
Exactly, completely missed the point. The point KM was making is that framing every achievement as the exception leads to pessimism and people not understanding their actual potential

1.) No I cannot prove it. But in this age of uber-clout chasing, do you find it THAT hard to believe? I think it is naïve to believe otherwise.

2.) :russ: you really think someone humble bragging for graduating school is somehow benefiting other black folk? How exactly is them posting "#BlackExcellence" benefiting anyone in here?

3.) Not insecure, and in fact I am largely indifferent. I graduated from a top-5 BSchool, and I distinctly remember an black Alum telling me my first year "dont let your graduation from here be your biggest accomplishment". So I always find it strange for someone to call themselves 'excellent' prematurely.

Its more about breaking generation curses and bad rhythms.

Also the only thing I like about Western Christianity is Gospel music and the music that descended from it. I need to look into the actual Eastern Origins and practices of it

I think the term is over used but I think it was meant for black people who succeeded against the odds. For instance, the black Greenwood district of Tulsa. Greenwood lost all it's wealth during the riots and bombings but what people don't know is Greenwood rebounded right after and became more prosperous than it was prior to the riots/bombings. That is an example of black excellence.

Black excellence was never to be compared to other races or ethnicities but to what we did in the face of white racial animus and supremacy. It is within that context that we use the term. My thread "America's Most Powerful Black Families" is a good example of this.

But also, from a Christian standpoint (reading the caption of the video) they're more right than wrong.
