half way in basically she says she felt the same racial issues in PR as in the states, and DR had a lot more issues. People called people with nappy/curky/kinky hair something that translated to bad hair, and most Ricans are brown skin but considered themselves white.
Pelo malo/pelo bueno (bad hair, good hair) the same issue that runs rampant in the black community is obviously rampant in the Latino community too. I did a Brazilian blow out stupidly once and my hair was straight for about two and a half months (it's semi permanent keratin straightening solution) because it was easy and I wouldn't have to restraighten it after it got wet, and after those months my hair would not curl at all anymore.

But everyone told me I looked better with straighter hair, even my mom (who has naturally straight hair). That shyt is perpetuated by every damn community, it don't even matter if your hair is kinky or not if your hair isn't straight it's unacceptable and considered ugly. Even in Brazil itself, that shyt is so normal. Chicks with my natural hair texture (tight curls) would have all have straight ass hair down to their butt because even the most loose curls are considered ugly or nappy. And the fukked up part was, when I did that blow out treatment I was suddenly considered more professional looking at my job.
