Which card specifically? Some cards have different requirements. Besides your specific FICO score, some banks weigh certain metrics differently, too. Some don't like "thin" credit files, some don't like a bunch of inquiries, some don't like high utilization, or many different combinations of whatever. The key is the exact reasons they provide for denial in the letter you received.

You can perform a search on myfico for the specific card you're interested in to get an idea as to what certain cards require:

I had the same issue. Bank of America was the only one that approved me for a unsecured card, and that was partly because I already had a checking account with them for 5 years in good standing.

Another 5 years later, a second credit card, never a missed payment, paid off auto loan, 770 credit score. The other companies send me offers now and they go straight to the:trash:

Well duh, but it’s all we got to function in society, just like education, a degree is a financial anchor, but it’s a means to an end to get anywhere in society

It's a scam? All you gotta do is pay your bills and don't borrow what you won't be able to pay back

I been paying all my shyt on time and in full every month since like 2015, still got denied

Anytime you get a hard inquiry on your credit it drops.

If you're in the process of building, carry a balance of less than 10% on your cards and give it some time.

this.

I just started doing this and went from a 650 to 817.

What you need OP is a card with points system and instead of using your debit card, use that card for EVERYTHING.

1) it provides a protection system for your real money
2) you get points for spending money you was going to spend anyway
3) it builds your credit

Don't worry about getting declined breh….People in the high 700s reported getting declined for cards that people in the low 700s get. Its just too many factors that different companies weigh. Just research a good card that you like and shoot your shot

It's not the denial that drops your score, it's the inquiry from applying. Everytime a lender checks your credit, an inquiry is recorded in your file. Each inquiry can drop your score from ~2 to ~10 points depending on other factors in your report.

Even with an excellent credit score, you can be denied credit. The most common reason is a high debt-to-income ratio. Other common reasons could be too many new accounts or high credit card utilization.

Get a secured credit card to build up your credit. CitiBank and others have a Secured Credit card that allows you to put down up to $2500 for a $2500 line of credit which you get back after consistently paying your bill for 18 months.
