This is a white-collar quarantine.’ How the pandemic is magnifying America’s class divide.

Ive been saying the same thing. I don’t want this to come out wrong but we needed this to happen. People are so lost in the illusion and fantasy of America that you need a moment like this to break the spell and show people just how ugly society is and can be if the wrong things happen. It’s like Temple of Doom when Short Round used fire to get Indy and the kids out of Kali-Ma’s spell. And the worse part is the most extreme it gets the better chance for change. But like you said, what kind of change we get is the wildcard.

With that, I’ll just leave this in here and say Happy Birthday to Baba Gil-Scott Heron:

Yeah it’s so funny to see all the people crying about all the handouts that people get and “THAT’S SOCIALISM” Now they can’t wait for that stimulus check and are crying and saying the government should give the people more and all that. The hypocrisy is astounding and I let all the people I know that was saying that bullshyt how they are hypocrites.

Well think about it, how much were we really taught about Civics, politics, etc? I’d bet at least half of this country doesn’t even believe in the vote because they don’t understand how it works. I took one class in 10th grade called NSL, but Montgomery County has some of best school in the country so I can’t imagine what other people are afforded. And that’s still just one class.

To me, this has been a concerted effort, whether knowingly or unknowingly, spanning decades in which every institution was eroded in the name of increasing the wealth of a few as well as maintaining a manageable society which is geared to individual pursuits and comforts over collective well being. That’s why it can swing either way imo. People at this point could probably be sold enough fear to turn this into a fascist state but that same fear could also spur an opposite reaction and spring people into action against those fears.

I really hope people are taking this time off to educate themselves but I imagine they’re prolly binge watching CNNmsnbcFoxNews and being told what to think by “experts”.

@No1 I didn't know how bad it was until I saw this yesterday.

Here's some food for thought theres people out there with $4.00 in their bank account. People lines for over a mile to get groceries from a food bank.

That’s not surprising. Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Sure, many could make a better financial decision here and there but for the most part it’s usually due to trying to have some sort of quality of life.

The poor have always suffered more than the rich...in every crisis ever.

If this is exposing anything it’s our ignorance and narcissism to think this is somehow special.
It needs to be pointed out because many of the rich don't even feel this is a crisis. I literally saw someone on facebook just write, "I don't know what there is to complaint about, quarantine isn't bad at all" and people liked it.

(Of course, she was a single twenty-something in a privileged profession living in a place where it's relatively easy to quarantine and still get out a lot.)

Pointing out the obvious doesnt mean youre exposing anything.

I find the older I get that empathy is harder to find, and its not because people don't care about other people or are completely selfish. Its that its become harder and harder to step out of your own shoes and into someone else's.

I disagree with this completely. People like that probably never had empathy in the first place outside of some sociology classes in college and some campus petitions. People grow up in segregated neighborhoods, go to segregated schools and end up in homogenous professions that people like them were bred for. People can “feign” empathy but someone like that won’t get it until it is at her doorstep. When people say stuff like that they’re usually trying to justify the actions of themselves and those around them and establish that they’re still “good” people.

And he's entitled to his perspective.

Wth is wrong with you man, and I say this as someone with a polar opposite view.

I've probably grown more empathetic over time because of how glaringly apparent, life is fukked up for most individuals.

Fam - please stop @me and quoting me. I’ve made it readily apparent that I find your attempts at goading me annoying.

I have been in Patriots threads with Listen for years and we haven’t had a single disrespectful interaction. I can assure you I ain’t in the mood for your poor man’s @88m3 routine today.

Some of y’all really expect people to not live the life they have and instead wallow in the misery and negativity that affects others...is it a problem that particular girl isn’t finding quarantine to be tough? Everyone has their own sets of problems, some financial, some personals, some with family and relationships...it’s like everyone has to see and care about the same issues as y’all to get kudos

I mean....maybe??

Closed off people will always be closed off to empathy towards things that aren’t in their closet with them...but that’s not who I was thinking of.

I was thinking more of the age we live in and how it becomes so easy to get tangled up and blinded by the connectivity over load in our daily lives.

There are so many things to worry about and so much information to process it seems it’s harder than ever to stop and really think about other people now.
