Scheduling and travel.

That's true for this year. But we would've loved LA squared in the Finals last year. Spurs/Lakers could've made some nice Finals in the past. It's not like every Finals is a compelling matchup. It's a crapshoot. You actually have a greater chance of having that compelling Finals if you aren't limited by conferences.

If schedules and travel limit you a conference then it should stay that way for the postseason. Now if the league is gonna change things to play East/West teams 41x a year each then it makes sense but if your conference and division still makes up 60% and 20% of your schedule you should be battling other conference teams 4 times of 7 till the best of each meet.

Scheduling and traveling are not as much of an issue come playoff time. Beyond that, you have teams that have to travel quite a ways intraconference games.

It's not, but the season games that heavily weigh on your record and seeding are restricted by it. So it should reflect in who you have to go through in April and May.

Put it like this. Lets say there is 1 spot left. 2 teams have the same record. One team plays okc or minnesota(all their top players are sitiing out for no good reason). The other team plays portland who is not resting players.

This type of situation is why I am for the play-in.

I also hope the team that loses the play-in, somehow wins the #1 pick

So what's the motivation for teams to push for 7-8 seed to grab the last 2 playoffs spot when they don't have to with this new format:why:

I’m not a fan of it on paper but if it makes for some entertaining games I’d rather see this than teams sitting players or openly tanking.

Going back to the best of 5 in the first round and the play in tournament is the best thing the league has done in a while. The winning teams are rewarded but at the same time, they can't get too cozy once that first round starts.
Facts.

Other than greed, there is no reason for a 1st rd 7 game series

It’s just a way to get money that they lost due to the pandemic. When y’all start looking at this as a business first instead of a competitive sport first you’ll be much better off.

Correct, but how do you justify everything else related to the actual product of the game. Do the stats count? Do they count separately? Is their W/L record affected for the season? If so, does it affect their Draft position?

Win the games you're supposed to win, and win against your Divvy/Conf mates when you see them. This is why W/L tie-breakers exist.

With 1 spot left and the same record you need the urgency to beat who's in front of you. Coli nikkas will cry about participation trophies then ask for a 9/10 seed to snatch a playoff spot from a team that earned their spot all season or get the #1 pick. I don't understand.

Counter point: one team has to play OKC. The other team has to play a clinched rested Nets B squad. What’s the difference?

This play in shyt has been great. It's kept teams from saying fukk it we're in the playoffs so we can coast to end the season. Portland, Denver, and Lakers grinding as hard as they can to avoid the play in game in the west and Knicks, Hawks, Heat and Celtics in the East. Then you got more teams going hard at the bottom that would've long just thrown the season away. New Orleans and the Wizards definitely would've given up on the season. then you got teams even at the 7 and seed fighting hard to avoid falling back to 9-10 and teams in 9-10 going all out trying to jump up to 8. I was completely against it to start the season but to me they've found a way to keep more teams engaged for a lot longer compared to a normal season.

It's always been like this. The last 2 weeks of the season, unless you were locked in at #1, everyone was jockeying for position and matchups.

Fukk this. You're professionals. Ain't no extra credit to bump you up over someone that was better than you the over an entire season.

It's not, but the season games that heavily weigh on your record and seeding are restricted by it. So it should reflect in who you have to go through in April and May.

I get that perspective. I look at it like 82 games of NBA comp is 82 games of NBA comp. 38 win squads shouldn't be getting in over 45 wins squads because of their conference. Teams get home court in the Finals based on records that are impacted/restricted by the same criteria.
