But you're still penalizing Golden State. Why should they have to play an extra game.

Because they seem intent on the doing the play-in tournament. If that's the case, then only do it if there's a certain number of games in the standings.

Teams 8-11 (except SA) still have games against each other, so you could theoretically have a situation where the's only a couple of games difference between them. If the cutoff point is 3 games to prevent the play-in, then they should have a play-in tournament for the third and final seed.

The Lakers are 3 games up on the 8th and likely will extend that lead with those other teams still having games against each other and SA difficult remaining schedule. If it's over 3 games, then don't do the play-in tournament for that seed or year.

The NBA has done a solid job of convincing people that this game has any long term ramifications beyond that play-in game. Portland won their play-in game last year and you had too many people convinced they stood a chance against the Lakers. It's the least effective Wild Card-esque situation in sports

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
If you lose, it wasn't your year either. :yeshrug:

This is the perfect counter to the load management phenomenon.

playing a single elimination game is different than playing a 7 game series.

And let's say for the sake of argument, Golden State wins the play in games, BUT Steph Curry gets hurt? Then what?

We got a MVP type year out of Steph Curry and he went down with a fight. :yeshrug:

The play in is making the regular season better, not the actual playoffs. The playoffs were always exciting and never a problem.

As a nikka that's been burned by teams resting superstars right before games personally, I disagree. :francis:

I think it adds incentive and excitement to the regular season.

Pre-COVID who was really doing load management on a regular basis besides Kawhi?

Zion, Porzingis and Embiid come to mind. LeBron and AD have both done it, not sure how regularly, and then you have guys who on random back to backs just wouldn't play for the fukk of it like Beverley, Harrell, etc.

the way i see it. it basically means these 7 thru 10 seed teams are playing each other for playoff spots, instead of playing a bunch of tanking teams who have called it a wrap on the season already. This way the best teams get the 7th and 8th instead of the the teams who got lucky with their end of season schedule and was 1 game over because their last 4 games were against tankers while another was playing competitive games against 8th and 9th seeds.

I wonder, if the NBA scheduling so many back to backs has anything to do with them changing the first round format to best of 7 from a best of 5.

The NBA should be having fewer playoff games and spread out regular season games. That will discourage load management.

Zion & Porzingis were being restricted because they were coming off major injuries. LeBron & AD barely missed games last season

I think it all has to do with ESPN & TNT loading up on Clippers, Pelicans & Warriors national games last season and it backfiring due to Kawhi sitting on B2Bs, Zion being out and the Warriors tanking :manny:
