I could never get past the "annual fee" so I have one of the cheapo AMEX credit cards. I get a few hundred dollars back a year in cash so it's

Since regular credit cards have reward points now, I think if you run the numbers you'll find that it's not worth the annual fee.
The Points On The Card I Applied For Are Tripled What A Regular Card Would Be
I will say this, if you have good enough credit, and enough restraint, then it's absolutely beneficial to get a charge card or credit card for that matter. It's almost impossible to function in the world without some form of credit, and it's easy to make charge or credit cards work for you. Dont let these people tell you otherwise.
This is not true, but carry on
AMEX cards are beneficial if you understand the proper way to use them.
AMEX cards were like debit cards before they existed. You made purchases and paid the balance, and built your credit in the process.
You should use your AMEX card instead of your debit card. And pay off your AMEX card monthly with the same money you would have used on your debit card. Think of it as a substitute, not extra money. Plus it provides protections and incentives that debit cards don't.
I got a gold Amex. If you're gonna spend money anyway, why not use it to accumulate points. Plus the extra warranty, protection and other privileges. You have to figure out if the points you accumulate is going to be worth more than the yearly fee you'll be paying.

Man credit plays a big part in a lot more than just your financial status. For example at my job, you can't even get a promotion without a line of credit. What about trying to buy a house or get that car you want for a non rape price. Credit and spending habits play a small part in most peoples livelihood unless you have a huge chunk of money laying around. Also I didnt say it was impossible, but try buying a nice house with no credit or getting a decent rate on a car without a huge down payment. Again, not saying it's impossible, it just makes things harder.
