Thoughts on speaking a foreign language @ work??

I am sure this topic has been brought up before, but I want to revisit the topic.

What are your thoughts on ppl who feel that it is OK to speak a non English speaking
language @ work?

My postion is that everyone need to speak a common language unless their specific job description calls for them to speak another language.

Other than that, it is impolite to rude especially around coworkers who do not speak that particular language.

I'm definitely not paranoid. I just have enough common sense not to use language that may offend others. I can do that on my own time.

Point - in a capitalist setup where competition follows supposedly free-market principles, you're advocating for what inevitably ends up as discrimination in hiring practices, for no other reason than to help you feel comfortable within your own self-imposed boundaries. Nothing is stopping you from learning that language, nor any other.


Counterpoint - simplicity in communicating across the board makes for better decision making and execution, and where money is the guiding principle, expediency in meeting the needs of greed will always win the day.

When ppl are on their coffee break, lunch break or in the parking lot coming to from work, then it is OK to talk their iish..

But, when clocking in (for those who clock in), then everyone need to speak one language!

I don't understand why some ppl don't understand this??

You are right, I can learn whatever language a fellow coworker is speaking, but what does that language have to do with the job itself??

It is simply rude to speak another language around others at work that don't speak that particular language UNLESS said language is necessary to communicate with customers, patients, clients, etc.

Outside the job description, speak English. Want to have a private conversation? Simply do that on your own time & dime.

You're not too old to learn some of another language

Breh, I got 7 backpacks of language books, dictionaries, verb books, dictionaries, etc.

Ol boy who died years ago (Laoshu) inspired me.

But, that isn't my issue. My issue is that some ppl think that it is OK to speak a foreign language at work with a diverse workforce and it isn't OK( with exceptions that I have already given).

To take it a step further, it isn't OK to use slang use profanity in the workplace. Ppl use it and it could cause unnecessary problems with ppl who may take offense.

I remember this Dominican girl and Mexican girl started speaking Spanish around me at work and I told them it’s rude they tried to tell me that it isn’t rude for them to speak their native language




Had to remind them that’s the white mans language and you’re not white

I didn't give the backstory as to why I brought this topic back up.

But, when I go to get a /medicure/pedicure and the Vietnamese women start talking in their language, then it does cross my mind that they are talking iish about me.

Difference is..

I don't work there. I just patronize their business.

I'm talking about something else.

And the true back story is about me having a semi detate with an alleged Hispanic female who posted anonymously on a FB page who didn't understand why speaking Spanish around her supervisors ( presumably white) was an issue?

If I'm at lunch with people of different ethnicities, I speak English not to be rude. If I'm alone with some one and we speak a common non English language, and you happen to be in ear shot, it's an A B conversation and non of your business. If you are part of the group socializing with us and you only speak English then I speak English.

i worked in all sorts of countries and have been surrounded by people speaking all manner of languages.

personally i don't care. not in the slightest. as long as they don't make too much noise they can speak any language they want.

i'm pretty indifferent, because i know it's natural to revert to your native language

but people have a right to that shyt, too. it's arguably anti-social behavior in a work setting
