His first 3 albums sold 13M copies

His last 4 albums sold about 3.5M

His sales dropped almost 65% from And Then There Was X... to The Great Depression

He fell off hard

How did Jay albums do after In My Lifetime vol 2?

I disagree with OP in the sense that... DMX definitely fell off earlier than he should have.

how so?

3 albums was the standard run with rap was organic.

X had 3 albums plus compilations, a ridiculous amount of features, numerous legendary tours, and he had movies.

he just knocked it out in 3 years instead of 5.

I agree that DMX had one of the worst fall offs ever.

But nobody in the history of Hip Hop has fallen off more than Rza- he had a run where he was arguably the best producer ever. Now? Garbage.

heres the thing tho: all these guys are washed.

show me a rapper that was poppin that long ago, and i'll show you a rapper that's making terrible music right now.

producers too.

X should have been able to be rich forever off hip hop. 15 dope songs + 5 hugely popular songs=touring forever. Instead X fell off massively and quickly. One of the worst cases in hip hop history.

he still tours.

you cant go from looking like potential future goat for one year after those first two albums....to droppin a "eehh" album...to droppin dud after dud:mjlol:

The falloff was pretty bad, makimg matters worse it happened while he was still at a high level of popularity making it more noticeable.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
heres the thing, when DMX blew up in '98, I wasn't expecting to still be checking for his new stuff like that in 2003.

same goes with everybody else that was poppin at the time.
exactly... dude had a nice run... probably one of the greatest of all time in hip hop... yes, he was a drug addict and it ruined things.. but his face from grace wasn't anything worse than most stars

truth be told... iggy is having the worst falloff ever.. grammy noms, platinum in 2015, #1 record, world tours... very next album can't even get a release date.. now who does that ever happen to.. they at least let you drop and fail... they won't even let her drop

anyways.... dmx

first album, #1, 4x plat
2nd, #1, 3x plat
3rd, #1, 5x plat
4th, #1, plat
5th, #1, plat
6th, #2
7th, #19

mind you these are #1 in the country, not rap charts... and the 7th album came after taking 6 years off, in 2012

a lot of rappers would kill somebody right now to have that type of "downfall"

then we talk about movies... like get the fukk out of here.. nikka wasn't in the fukking shining or something.. he was doing little hood movies with jet li and steven segal and shyt.. you can't even say he was in a single blockbuster

belly
romeo must die
exit wounds
cradle to the grave
never die alone

like get the fukk out of here... shyt wasn't no major hollywood nothing.. them shyts would be straight to netflix today

You're laughing as if that's an outlandish statement , shyt is easily a contender for top 10 - 20 .
Ok. Rattle off 20 of the greatest hip hop albums ever. I'm curious to see what won't make it before It's Dark And Hell is Hot.

@DMGAINGREEN
doesn't have to be an exhaustive list and I won't hold you to it.
Just rattle off some clear GOAT contenders...I think you'll see there are a lot of albums that are clearly in the discussion before IDAHIH. No diss to the album...I love it...this hip hop shyt is a lot deeper than we all realize though.
@Wacky D knows what I'm talking about.

that's not how it went at all.

youre pushing your personal opinion as the general consensus.

Thats definitely how it went, the degrees might vary on how much they liked those duds, but when those albums dropped those albums aint hit the same....the fact this thread exist is proof that it happened sumthing like I said, versus it "not happpening like that at all"....if he had the run u think he did this "myth" wouldnt exist and be agreed on among so many people.

First 3 X albums are still in constant rotation. Great Depression and Grand Champ were let downs but I still bought them back then to support the Dog.

no its not.

for starters, a lot of people rocked with the 3rd album more than the 2nd. and it was definitely his most successful release commercially, and it was getting crazy play in the streets.

X started tapering off when he fell back and started doing the movies while a whole new crop of rappers were comin up. then he came back and dropped "the great depression" which was his 1st and arguably the only dud he dropped before his "retirement". that was the only album of the 1st 5 where the general consensus was lukewarm.

it is a myth because its something that people started running with years later in the midst of a new landscape while applying the thought process of said new landscape to an era that proceeded it. the main point of the thread is that rap was different & more organic back then. people are just looking at things from a current perspective where we see rappers 10 years past their prime, still being forced onto the public as elite stars. and then people look at jay-z and wonder why X isn't doing what hes doing.

and now, we're at the point where yall are tryna chop DMX run up and say that it was just '98. I mean come on man. you dissin "and then there was x" as if he wasn't basically headlining probably the hottest tour of this century at the time that it was out. that ruff ryder/cash money tour. I guess we're supposed to erase all of that, and just act like he was only hot in 1998 now.
