fukk all that. Pick a career that has a really high floor. So that way you can be a software engineer making 200k+ a year "stuck" in a mid level role and all you really gotta concern yourself with is getting your work done and being polite (which is something you should be doing anyway). Cry about less talented people who are clearly better schmoozers than you moving up like this

The topic is about moving up and advancing :yeshrug: your career

Only 6% of blk folks earn over 6 figures…
It’s also very tough to break into coding as well. 🤷‍♂️

Job hopping would beat that list everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. But it's a good strategy for avoiding layoffs to be considered a team player. Not guaranteed it will lead to a promotion or higher salary but I know job hopping can.
:yeshrug:
Yep but in today’s climate… it’s tougher than ever to job hop…

That’s why I mentioned networking—it’s a lot easier to get your foot in the door thru referrals

I feel conflicted because a “bothsider” made this thread….:patrice: Lol

But I concur. :ehh:

You gotta be social with the right ppl though. There are social gathers all the time with our practice; I only attend the ones with the ppl capable of giving me a promotion or raise :skip:

It’s been working for me so far lmao

If you gotta waste your personal time on that shyt be smart about it.
Yep.

It also helps to be proactive. Not sure what level you are but from what I continually hear and have observed is that most ppl are poor communicators who wait to be told what to do. They don’t follow up.

You can simply say:
-Last week we discussed X, here’s where we are with that

-Summarize progress: “We’ve completed Z.”

-Highlight current issues briefly: “We’re facing some challenges with A, but are addressing them.”
-Next steps: “Upcoming priorities include B and C.”

Making your manager/stakeholders successful helps

the more i think on it, yeah nah fukk all that - the more visible you are, the easier it becomes to draw competition you never planned for :dead: especially the social event stuff

also when it comes to presentations GO WATCH GOOD PRESENTATIONS whether its on youtube, a random university ted talk, something else going on in your building, etc and start understanding how you can improve for your audience. overprepare. think about what questions anyone in the room could have and don't just think of an answer - frame out how whatever you're working on directly or indirectly supports their goals. because anyone can throw shyt on a board and confirm bias without actually helping anyone.

only pick fights you know with absolutely certainty you can win. but even then don't name names - name the office and frame the issue around ways you can improve mutually. arguing is for bums but more than anything it makes people not want to get involved. you will fall into the trap of isolation all on your own

and learn to speak the language of whatever industry you're in or working with. a dude who doesn't know what frictionless materials are doesn't belong in an emerging tech discussion the same way a guy who can't tell the difference between pan seared and grilled doesn't belong in a kitchen

help people who want to be helped and can be helped. don't hold it against them if they don't want it

ya'll nikkas love this system, getting a promotion is the idea of progressing?

skining and grinning with people that hate regardless of what i do aint the way for me
or maybe you're the best guy for the job and want to be able to prove it

maybe some folks work in community development, health and human services, policy, etc

if you want to do more at scale - you simply have to get higher up. so its not about dollar sign validation or 'skinning and grinning' for many

It depends on the type of job you have. Some jobs are production jobs that generate revenue and other jobs are support jobs. Support jobs can actually pay extremely well.
So I agree with you that in most production jobs the best way to do better is just do your own thing instead of kissing azz.

But in a support job like a hr rep or gov regulation or compliance or middle mgmt; the only way to grow is by being promoted because none of these positions can exist independently of a firm.

Not everybody is in a production job like trucking, engineering, sales, etc.

in that sense i agree. but when i see people fighting over becoming managers, supervisors nah not for me wayy to much fake shyt, if i like i like u....am cool with two of my supevisors/managers, one of them is a sista. the amount of work that they have to do is crazy, having to attend meetings on their days off, having to be on call if a subordinate needs something or their own boss, always in meetings barely having any time to eat or family...nah

yea in some jobs if wanna make difference you right, but if i gotta basically become a mega slave to these corporations for what, maybe 20-30 percent more money....am already been monitored in my bathroom times, breaks, lunch and production, nah am good i appreciate my free time........ shyt even if they doubled my salary , with the personality that i have and would quit. :pachaha:

The goal should always be to eventually get out of Corporate America. I think the more employee owned Businesses in this country the better.

this is the nonsense i see asians do. i'm articulate, can be humorous, express ideas & routinely hit quota. however, i'm an introvert & value my time/peace. for those of you, who're the same, trying op will exhaust you into burnout & depression. instead, be "invaluable" i.e i go on leave, team never hit 50% quota, i stay & our numbers never fall below 90%. why?? i've got a 60% close rate vs the 30% industry/company average. my title doesn't say vice, manager, senior nor have the same duties but best i'll get paid and/or have references like one. ultimately, ask what are you progressing for?? get in, build a rep, experience and then job hop. don't treat work like a new girl you're dating rather its a marriage that's run its course but you're staying until the kids graduate.

I suppose in OP's defense, he never said it was a white office or white corporation. :pachaha:

I agree that pretty much everything he mentioned is time wasting at a white corporate office, but If you were in major firm in st louis or atlanta or Raleigh, his list is pretty applicable . These are offices where your competition for a position is other black people, and your boss is also black. The differentiating factor at this point is sociability.

I find that with white corporations if you want a higher corporate position, it's better to leave and go to a smaller company(which values your experience at the larger company) to get the higher position as a new hire. After a few years at the small company, you can lateral back to your old company as a rehire once you have documented experience in the role that you were trying to be promoted to. This method side steps all the azz kissing of white coworkers and directors who are always going to pick their fellow white friends anyway.
That could be true.

I worked at one of the largest organizations in Chicago. It would be considered a white org as you said. Probably 60-70% white. Butttt the some of the leaders of the org were blk.

The leader of our IT was a blk woman who lives on the southside of Chicago—bronzeville
The leader of a few of our teams were blk women. Another dept was led by a blk man

So I saw these white men/ppl taking orders from blk folks.

What I said in the OG will do more good than harm… especially if you’re tactical, strategic networking, and of course not being a try hard but being respectful and helpful.

Edit:
I remember thinking? How the hell is this guy in management? He’s terrible… but I learned that he played the game.

There were ppl i worked with who were non white who got promoted and were not very skilled in my opinion but were generally nice, helpful guys who played the game
