To nobody's* surprise other countries are already trying to capitalize on republicans adversarial relationship with education and science.

A Hong Kong college has promised "unconditional offers" for international students at Harvard after the Trump administration revoked the Ivy League's ability to enroll them.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) said it would help "ensure a smooth transition" for students who may be unable to enroll for the next school year.

The White House's attempt to prevent Harvard enrolling international students next year is the latest blow in its fight with America's oldest—and richest—university, which refused to comply with government's demands to change how it hires and teaches. The U.S. government is cracking down on elite colleges it alleges are overrun by left-wing extremists and antisemitic movements.

A Harvard spokesperson told Newsweek the new action is unlawful and the university is "fully committed to maintaining Harvard's ability to host our international students and scholars." Harvard is already suing over a cut of more than $2 billion in federal funding.

HKUST's announcement comes shortly after the Chinese government criticized the move. More than 1,000 Chinese students currently attend the Ivy League school.

...

In a news release, HKUST said on Friday it was "extending this opportunity to ensure talented students can pursue their educational goals without disruption."

HKUST said it will prioritize expedited admissions, credit transfers, and provide support including visa assistance and housing "to ensure a smooth transition," adding that a dedicated team has been established to assist students.

HKUST is ranked sixty-sixth best in the world in the Times Higher Education's college rankings 2025. Harvard placed third.

It comes after the Trump administration said it had revoked Harvard's certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which gives the school the ability to sponsor international students to get their visas and attend school in the U.S. It would be effective for the 2025-26 school year.

Harvard enrolled 6,703 international students in the 2024-2025 school year, according to school data, amounting to a quarter of its total. Of these, 1,203 were from China.

Those students will have to transfer to other schools or lose their legal status, according to the Department of Homeland Security

China is trying to get ahead in science, and the fascism in America is eroding it's soft power. The international students that traveled to america to study at harvard will simply go back to Hong Kong or choose to study in a Chinese university.

Reminder: The people running Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and AMD are all from Asia. Asians make up a significant part of America's tech sector and if China succeeds in not only REVERSING its brain drain, but poaching students of south Asian descent too(seeing how south asia has a lot of security issues right now) they will benefit from America's stupidity and cruelty.

But hey I guess that doesn't matter if america falls behind as long as white supremacy gets a W right?

The international students going to Harvard dont want anything to do with Hong Kong. These are the best of the best of their own countries, who understand what a Harvard degree can do for them career-wise and research-wise.

They are equally eligible for Oxford, Stanford, and that one fancy Swiss school. In comparison, that Hong Kong school is a dead end degree. A normal state school might actually be better for these students since a lot of them intend to work in America. For instance, during grad school the Indian in the office next to me had his funding cut in the middle of his PhD program from an ivy, and chose to go to my American no name state school despite his ability to go to foreign ones because the American University would be his ticket into the American job market.

This dude graduated and is now at Facebook as a doctoral worker at Oculus. This is a position he would have no chance of getting whatsoever, if he had went to a foreign school.

They're never going to go to China simply because of salaries. You can't compare what a senior engineer at Nvidia gets to their counterpart in Huawei. Hell, an entry level embedded engineer at Nvidia makes multiple times what a senior engineer in Huawei makes simply because China is still a middle income country.

I've only seen poaching work when China is trying to get native born American researchers. In this instance, they are trying to steal intellectual property and they are more than willing to pay double what these researchers and professors are getting in America in order to get their intel.

I actually did a few research papers in college about these guys, and a lot of them are wanted by the State department , dod, , DOJ because of the information they were giving away.. hence why China will pay them a premium. They're not going to pay a premium for no name researchers trying to get their initial doctorate at Harvard.

The stupid shyt that this stupid administration is missing is, when international students come to the US... it's not just education. They adapt our ideals.

We literally have the dumbest mothafukkas running this country.

SOFT POWER, to a president who claims not to be a warmonger is important.
