What exactly makes you think Trout is thinking "I'm giving you clowns one year to get it together or I'm skating." The one year deal is a good faith deal from the club, they didn't have to give him an increase. There are reports that he might be closing in on a 6 year deal (covering arbitration years and a couple of free agent years)

Trout was unhappy that he didn't get a slight raise last year, so Angels just to keep him happy gave him a raise this year. (Neither was mandatory)
