:francis:This is the worst, most reductive take I have seen on this. You really don't hang around academics and STEM professionals, do you? There is a pipeline of consumer, governmental, and enterprise goods that come directly from research.

Well this is a reductive version of what my post said,Seeing as though i said keep those who are worthy. There arent that many geniuses in most fields. Wise people like myself understand what too many cooks in a kitchen results in:respect:

And i stick by my statement that not everything needs to be researched just because there are people researching it.

Above the fray.
This is why Trump said yesterday Americans don’t have the skills and we need 600,000 Chinese up in here. I do love watching almost all of his earlier actions and policies failing. I hate people had to suffer for it though.

Trump ended up walking that back for the same reason he made comments about deportation exemptions for immigrants who work in the agriculture industry.

Campaign trail tough talk about "getting rid of foreigners" eventually meets the REALITY of the role those foreigners play in the American economy. And the impact that booting them out will have on that economy, short and long term.

Of course it is not invincible. Nothing is, but him destroying the country is not a good thing.

Republicans were willing to let Trump take a weed slasher and blowtorch to the US structure to aid their White supremacy efforts, but they mistook just how wealthy, resilient and secure the US economy is. they overrated America's actual strength and standing in the world.

All Republicans know is that the US is the richest and most powerful nation so there was enough of a cushion to let Trump slash and burn it all, and now look.

In 2 years I'll have his job, processing at 15 times the speed. An intern can do the prompting. :youngsabo:

Low key, one of the problems that The Left/Dems have is that the folks in charge/the folks with the money - don't give enough to the people with the ENERGY to go door to door.

The Left/Dems have all of these blind spots and make unforced errors.

The candidates wasn't trying to do podcasts.
They never really answer questions - it's always some forced way to mangle some political point into "pineapples on a pizza, yes or no"

I've said this before, the Ayn Rand foundation was giving 1,000 scholarships for The best Fountainhead Essays at my high school.

That's how you develop talent.

But naw.

The Left, Progressives, or maybe a Black People Party needs to step away and build OUR OWN ground game. I don't see a lot of folks of my political persuasion talking about this, much less organizing.
Damn i totally remember entering this contest as a 16 yr old completely obvious to who ayn rand was or what the group's political philosophy was. So there is truth to the power of endocrination of your base at the early levels. :pachaha:

As a teenager it seemed too easy that they just wanted us to write an essay on a book, and some magical organization would throw their money at us. :wow:

Thank goodness I didn't win the essay contest cause if I did, there's a high chance I'd be one of these talking heads on libertarian or conservative news outlets :russ:

I suppose in his defense he is talking about basic research. That would be that theoretical stuff he's mentioning. I see where he would think from a layman's perspective that it doesn't seem useful. I think he just lacks a bigger picture view.

He's probably unaware of the things like the nuclear bomb or transister based computers coming from that same theoretical basic science . Even in their contemporary era, these revolutionary technologies had detractors the thought they were useless nonsense. For example, practical dudes like Nokolai Tesla had publicised debates against Einstein specifically because his work was theoretical, even to the extent of calling the legendary e = mc equation "mathematical poppycock" because it couldn't be proven at the time. :pachaha:

I think it's a failure of the education system that we don't teach people in highschool exactly what science is and how it works ,from the research lab to the boardroom. I personally never heard about the significance of basic science until deep into undergrad.

Sounds good in theory, but remember..

Most of these --> :mjpls: states have military bases, weapons manufacturers, power plants, nukes, farm land, etc
@WIA20XX 's proposal is not as bad as it sounds. Remember since they don't like education they won't have any residents who are capable of using any of that equipment.

I'd imagine most academics would flee to the northeast or West Coast where they would actually get funding for research. And would you like to guess which states would give them free education to pursue nuclear engineering? It sure as hell wont be the state's focused on trade schools :mjlol:

I would compare a state like Kansas which has a bunch of nuclear missile silos to Kazakhstan or Ukraine shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They had hundreds of WMDs , but not a single person in the entire country could operate them because the brains of the ussr were in Moscow. :russ:

It's crazy you think that you have to be a genius to do academic research that contributes to the public good. It only shows the public's ignorance about what research is, what it does, and how it benefits everyone. No one ever claimed that to do research you have to be brilliant or a genius. It's usually collaborative, and requires a lot of failure to engage in innovation. The mad scientist in the lab is folklore.

Here's what AI says about the contributions of academic research:

1. Medicine and Healthcare

  • Vaccines: Research has led to vaccines for diseases like polio, measles, and COVID-19, saving millions of lives.
  • Antibiotics: Discoveries like penicillin revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections.
  • Medical Imaging: Technologies like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans were developed through academic research.
  • Cancer Treatments: Advances in chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy originated in research labs.
  • Public Health Policies: Research informs guidelines on nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention.

2. Technology and Communication

  • The Internet: Initially developed as a research project (ARPANET), it forms the backbone of modern communication.
  • Smartphones: Innovations in semiconductors, wireless communication, and touchscreens stem from academic research.
  • Artificial Intelligence: AI technologies like machine learning and natural language processing are rooted in decades of research.
  • GPS: Based on research in physics and engineering, GPS technology is now essential for navigation.
  • Quantum Computing: Emerging from physics research, it has the potential to revolutionize computing.

3. Energy and Environment

  • Renewable Energy: Solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage systems are products of academic research.
  • Climate Science: Research has provided insights into global warming, leading to renewable energy policies and sustainability practices.
  • Nuclear Power: Advances in nuclear physics made nuclear energy possible.
  • Energy Efficiency: Innovations in LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances help reduce energy consumption.

4. Transportation

  • Electric Vehicles (EVs): Research in battery technology and electric motors has spurred the development of EVs.
  • Aviation: Aerodynamics and materials science research have improved aircraft safety and efficiency.
  • Autonomous Vehicles: AI and robotics research are driving the development of self-driving cars.
  • High-Speed Rail: Engineering research has enabled faster, more efficient train systems.

5. Information and Knowledge

  • Search Engines: Algorithms for indexing and retrieving information were developed through computer science research.
  • Online Education: Platforms like MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are based on research in education technology.
  • Data Science: Advances in statistics and computing allow us to analyze and interpret massive datasets.

6. Entertainment and Media

  • Streaming Services: Compression algorithms and network optimization research make platforms like Netflix possible.
  • Video Games: Advances in computer graphics, AI, and virtual reality enhance gaming experiences.
  • Special Effects: Research in physics and computer science has revolutionized visual effects in movies.

7. Agriculture and Food

  • Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Research in genetics has increased crop yields and resistance to pests.
  • Precision Agriculture: Drones and sensors, developed through engineering research, optimize farming practices.
  • Food Preservation: Research has led to techniques like freeze-drying and vacuum packaging.

8. Social and Behavioral Insights

  • Psychology: Research informs mental health treatments and therapies.
  • Economics: Insights into market behavior and policy-making come from academic studies.
  • Sociology: Research helps us understand social structures and improve inclusivity and equity.

Coming from you I'm absolutely not surprised unlike the others that you would come up with this anti-intellectual take. You keep proving yourself on this forum
