Why exactly do these homes not have basements? I can't understand how anything built in Tornado Alley doesn't have some sort of underground saferoom.

It should be a requirement for all homes. I'm guessing because it's just not taken seriously & we're kinda numb when it comes to tornadoes. It's one of those things were it's like "oh it's just a tornado warning" & never expect stuff like this to happen (although it has in the past).

Here's how it usually goes
You get a tornado warning
Wait for it to pass
It usually hits some random small town far away from the city

This shyt was brutal. This kind of damage could have easily happened on Sunday too because it was looking terrible out there. This kinda shyt has me speeding up the relocation process

A h.s. classmate of mine posted on facebook earlier that she and her family are ok, despite the tornado destroying her neighborhood.

Its starting to hit me now. I knew she moved back to OK after she finished school but :damn:

Outside of a tsunami I can't think of anything scarier than seeing a tornado. At least with a hurricane u have several days to a week to get ready. In a tornado they might only give u a min warning and u have no idea where it will hit.

you don't have basements in this part of the country because of the soil being relatively thin before you hit a rock layer that is really tough to dig through. Because of that, its much for feasible to build homes on concrete slab foundations. You see them in more northern states because of the frost line and deeper soil. Basically when building a foundation you have to dig down to bedrock to lay foundation. This is usually pretty deep and below the frost line, so you might as well build a basement. The type of basements you see in homes would do nothing for a Tornado. You'd basically need a reinforced concrete shell to keep debris out of to keep you from being sucked out.

The D (where it's so cold)
tornadoes are easily the most frightening looking of the natural disasters... this isn't from the one that just happened in okc, but look at this:
