The problem with a lot of these old hip hop reviewers is that they're afraid of being cut off from the power source - be it Jay, Kanye, whoever. There seems to be a movement among many in hip hop to make it more artistic on the most superficial levels (cover artwork, music videos, tour set ups, etc) while the music sees very little effort or evolution. But instead of calling this out, many reviewers would rather sip a cocktail at a Def Jam party and nod their head to the bullshyt.

Jay sounds lost from beginning to end of MCHG. I can imagine ASAP Rocky turning those beats into dope songs, but Jay sounds out of his element. It's shocking that even Dream Hampton can admit that. I bet Jay called her for clarification. :skip:

Not saying rappers need to rap about "the struggle" all the time, nor am I saying Jay is so rich I can't relate. The problem is that the album boils down to a bunch of weak, corny "I'm rich" verses with nothing sticking. You know why I moderately fukk with 2 Chainz? Because nearly all his songs got at least a couple witty lines or phrase switches. Juicy J be rapping about the same shyt yet makes me smirk due to a slick line all the damn time. Jay's rapping on MCHG is basically Fisher Price status shyt.

I realize someone gonna come up in here and "break down" some song on the album. Sure, Jay got some metaphors. But overall he wastes way more bars than saves. You see it in the reviews, which praise the production and dismiss the rapping. And it goes back to my point about these people (Jay, Kanye to a lesser extent, etc) focusing on everything BUT writing good songs. They got the fancy, expensive hook with the hot feature, they got the beat, they got the drums...but there's no substance.

(disclaimer: I love Yeezus)

Agreed on nearly everything except I don't like most of the production.

I don't like the production on Vol. 3 either. All those casio beats  but Jay was spitting the hell on them. Lyrically, flow etc. this is his worst effort ever. From start to finish. There's only a small grip of sngs where he's on it.

I would even say Ye was better on the mic on Yeezus than Jay on MCHG. He played some kinda schizophrenic character, he would say some wild shyt but it would be funny and memorable because of the ludicrousness of it all. Jay however sounds uninterested and lazy. For the last how many albums has he destroyed the first song lyrically? Even BP3 had What You Talkin' About and KC The Prelude.

That is just a strange lyric...

He went from having Biggie's fat ghost dikkride him on record to having his infant daughter that can't even speak yet express to other n1ggas how he is the man...

Nevermind the fact that its corny, it just doesn't make sense...And say what you want about him but he never had a problem making sense in his lyrics in the past..It's just lazy and odd for an emcee of his caliber to record, wrap and ship out some lyrics like this as a finished product for consumption..Don't know if its arrogance or laziness but its not up to his standards..

It can be people are so in a rush to call Jay washed up they will rush to criticize an album lyrically and have half the album go over their heads:ohhh:

I dont get in what world BP3>MCHG.

Its not his best, but I think its honestly his best since AG.

I saw on here where some thought the first song was about an actual female :comeon:

So its not hard to argue that SOME could be losing the references/metaphors on the album (its not incredibly deep but it does have some references/allusions/metaphors that i personally didnt get in the first sitting, giving the album replay value IMO.)

I coulda done with out versus, part 2, roc la familia and tom ford.

This album has the standard hov formula (balling, obscure shyt that most ppl wont get, mixed with personal thoughts/feelings) and great production.

Another thing I could agree on is that the album is not tight/cleaned up enough (it feels rushed in certain parts.) but to say its trash, or his worst i think is a stretch. That is def bp3.

He married Beyonce.. that Beyonces husband in their minds:smugfavre:

yup.

the nikka is a winner (12/4/01 aside), I give him that. it almost seems like dumb luck, but its not. he's brilliantly calculating. he got old bytches that grew up in the golden era that fukk w/ his surface brand name lyrics, the niggs that thirst them, hustlers and them 'yonce fans that co-sign everything even remotely attached to her. he can rap over a the sound of a broken carburetor and it'll get a co-sign.

My point is that I don't give a fukk about hiphop reviews from people who are not hiphop heads. I don't care about grammy's, mtv awards, bet awards and all that bullshyt.

If the streets, the clubs, the hiphop community, djs, hiphop magazines, hiphop sites, hiphop blogs, the internet hiphop community, other rappers and shyt fukks with it, then I know people fukk with it.

I got to pitchfork and them for other genres which consists of 50% of my music catalogue.
Not for hiphop although I co-signed GKMC being the album of the year last year (together with Frank Ocean, Beach house and Tame Impala) and MBDTF being the album of the year in 2010. These non-hiphop heads reviews were not my confirmation of what the word was.
U lie. If u didnt give a fukk u wouldnt be in literally every MCHG thread

I dont understand this "i dont care" stance. Everyone who posts in the booth cares. Hip hop and everything that comes from it- the music, the people, the stories, the public's perception of it- matter to us. nikkas need to stop fronting

Yeah
Is it lyricially in relation to his other albums?:leostare:

Cuz like I said I can prove by track by track comparisons that its one of Jay's better albums lyrically and substantially:whoo:

U wanna try me? :mjpls:

Or just admit MCHG went ova ya head and that ur a cac that hates black excellence :myman:

Breh he sounds dumbed down on this shyt in comparisons to his past work.

It didn't go over my head at all it just sounds "very safe" and mediocre to me for it to be jay aka the guy who made blueprint!

If you were a real jay fan you wouldn't support this album it sounds half ass.

And I'm not a cac dumbass I can almost guarantee that I'm more black and supportive of my culture then you. Just because you decided to dikk ride some 40 year old rapper on the internet who likes to brag for an hour come off as a false trendsetter pretentious artisty dikk rider is not my problem.

The only reason you probably made such a ignorant comment is because your just like your favorite rapper....insecure, you feel threatened and unsure of your own opinion so you have to defend him at all cost.

Your pathetic.

I should curb stomp your mother for giving you birth and play jays album at her funeral.
