I got a question tho? Why is it that Trap music is flourishing but Chicago Drill music kinda stagnanted. Last good drill mixtape was Free Crack 2 and Ballin like Kobe. It feels like Drill music ain't popping and yet Atlanta trap is still on top. Makes no sense. Maybe cuz these drill rappers are too busy getting killed.

Trap = Metal to rock, for better or for worse

The mainstream co-opted rock and metal in the 80s to the point where you had Van Halen shredding on a MJ song.

Now the mainstream is co-opting trap, giving Future features on Maroon 5 songs. Every songs gotta have those fukking hi hats, every songs gotta have 808s.

Kendricks album is him rapping on generic trap shyt and of course everyone eats it up:mjlol:

I think Trap really devolved in a lot of ways. You had a period where you getting more atmospheric/vibe from it with Metro Boomin, but he's just on autopilot lately. The Mask off beat has been made 100 times by Metro before that for Future, it just had that sample.

Really, the best trap music you can find is almost always underground. Lot more passion and hunger in the beats. You still get the occasional banger from someone like Keef, Wop usually picks good trap beats, Future's beat selection was good for a minute there. It's meant to be an underground sound, which is why I think Gucci is probably so looked up to. He treads the line between the mainstream but he really knows the trap sound inside and out. He represents that underground side. When trap becomes co-opted and you get dudes like Drake making IYRTITL it becomes corny and wack. When you get EDM dudes who never listened to trap in their life but heard about this "hot new sound sweeping the globe" and hopping on the bandwagon it becomes corny. Trap and 808s WILL Be the sound of this decade, but it will be just like the corny 80s production, and very few records will age well with that sound.

Trap is now at the point where we're getting wack underground movements like Bones whole TeamSESH shyt "What if we were emo on trap beats?"

Now we got lil peep trashing shyt up and even the underground is polluted. At the very least we can separate it from "Hipster trash" to good trap shyt.

And of course you have the Ugly God's and Lil Pump's who are Lil B's children and trashing shyt up.

It doesn't help that every beat is "dope" now according to the public. Anything with trap drums is automatically amazing. Everyone loves trap beats, everyone wants to rap on one. Well that's why you have the oversaturation of trash.

That was a trap song? I must be really out of touch.

But anyway, most popular music is shytty period. If it isn't trap it'll be something else polluting the airwaves.

Trap has a lot of hidden potential when blended in with other stuff

The Hills has Trap production...just not traditional Trap subject matter...

Travis Scott makes good Trap music too...and he doesn't rap about slinging dope...

But yeah I didn't fukk with Trap until nikkas like Metro Boomin Wondagurl and Eastbound got in...never cared for that Orchestra Trap that Shawty Redd and Lex Luger was into...

Here's my -- dumb -- take on trap music and those who produce it:

Musicians should have a healthy diet of music they listen to. Barricading yourself and only listening to your specific sub-genre limits growth as a person and as a musician. Some of the best beats and their respective samples come from genres' outside of hip-hop. Take the classic dragrap song that has been sampled in countless songs; many people wouldn't have guessed that the song was made by a new york crew based on the themesong from a 1960's series called "dragnet". Drill and Trap music suffer from the listeners realizing that the ignorance their spouting in their melodies is their lifestyle or the lifestyle the artist wants. How many times can you take hearing about doing drugs or disrespecting some dead "Op" that you've never even met?

Trap music in a traditional sense is already dead but if you're talking about this new alternative pop genre it's not going anywhere anytime soon it will only evolve. I can't even think of the last traditional bar for bar rapper to pop on a mainstream level in the last couple years nikkas kinda over that shyt besides rap nerds.
