if you're talented at making music then you will succeed at making good music. If you're talented in business and marketing, then you will succeed at making money. If you want both, then you have to be talented at both or make strategic alliances with people who complement whatever you're lacking. The next man's success or failure has nothing to do with you. The label is free to sign who they want and support who they want. just like you're free to not sign with them. again, most people play "armchair A&R" because the artist who claim "it's not fair, i'm more talented than _______" keep talking about it in their music. If they stopped talking about it and just focus on making good music and good business, then the best at both aspect would succeed and everything falls into place.

when we, the particpants and fans who enjoy the music, turn it around into something else - we lose focus on what it means to us. I dont worry about the agency an actor is with, what studio made a film, or how much its raking in the box office, when all I want to do is watch the kind of movie I like and enjoy it.

its wild to me when fans turn this hip hop thing into numbers and money that someone else is profiting off of. acting like the money (someone elses) being made is more important than the music. all of a sudden its like we're doing accounting and marketing strategies for them. soon we are going to start extrapolating and analyzing the factors of first quarter sales, resizing the pie chart for more proportional distribution amongst teens, count up how many white boy djs will be spinning this, multiply the seasonal influence, and calculate if urban radio plays it before 8 pm :pachaha:

it aint fun. the music is about feeling it, and not looking too deep into the other side and using that as a means to validate the music. millions buy beiber, but I could give a fukk. everyone wants to be getting a glimpse at the appropriate forms to make sure that the numbers are correct before we cosign it.

so many fans go ahead and scold, cheer, and rally behind a man who can play politics better than someone else, or create memes and hop aboard a new bandwagon when the music isnt even that hot. and they dont even defend the music, they defend those who "play the game" and start to do numbers or gain attention.

shyt is hitting me like ... why? fans have turned into A&Rs, but to no real positive effect. its not changing anything, in fact, its celebrating the numbers game over the music. fukk all that.

maybe the reason i don't feel like buying MC Lyrical's album is because 3/4ths of the songs are about how he's underrated and how he should sell more than ______. it's really a slave mentality. Why do people expect majors to :cape: them? why do some rappers feel so entitled to fortune and fame? chances are you're music is doing exactly what it's suppose to do. and that goes for anything in life. Same thing with nice guys complaining about not getting bytches. same thing about people complaining about being broke even though they work hard as fukk. Chances are you're exactly where you should be in life. It's not just about how talented and hard-working you are. it's also about who you know, how you strategize and what you choose to focus on.so if people keep bytching, they should expect a reply. as Clint Eastwood famously once said,

I dont sweat a movie/album/video game based on what the creators said about the numbers they did or didnt do, if they partnered with the right companies for cross promotions, or if they handled their business like a marketing/accounting major. its not what I care about.

is the movie/music/ video game good? :dwillhuh: so articles like this are tripping on its whole premise, because all in all its stripped out the quality of the product, in order to tell you to support someone who played politcs and business smartly. all the while ignoring the quality of what we are looking at.

this is all a marketing trick as well, as they try to get everyone involved in numbers and chart positions instead of if they like it or not. they cheer on the workings and hustle behind the product nowadays as a means of getting you to get behind it. its all nonsense. has nothing to do with the music, and all in all its a part of whats wrong with the game.

i feel you on that. but you gave the example of movies. here's the difference between movies and rap music. Imagine if indy film makers made all their movies about how their type of movies don't seel because they are too smart. imagine if that was literally the theme and subjects of ALL their movies. Then of course critics are gonna start talking about why their movies don't sell.

overall i agree with you. i don't really give a fukk who is or isn't selling or the politics of it all. I just want good music whether it comes from Kanye, Snoop, Killer Mike, dead prez, Wayne, 2chainz, Bieber or whoever. My whole point is that sometimes it's the artist that complain about the fact they're not getting play. By doing that, they're the ones who end up making it about sales and politics. I agree with you but the rappers also need to make better music, handle their business and stop bothering us with the politics and bytching.

its mostly boring rappers who waste time in their verses complaining about shyt. and on the other side its men always talking about their sales or how much of a following they have ... and its all boring to me unless theyre talented enough to make it sound good. these writers, and fans can miss me with that "he got #$ for that record" "its playing in all the clubs" "this is that crossover record that he needs" "he got so and so on his first single I think its a good look because now ..." the sales didnt affect how illmatic sounded to me when it was out, and I didnt salute hammer just because he made guap on an addams family record.

only if the musics good, Ill listen and support. someone wants to talk sales, and go on and on about those who are playing the business game right (even though their music is trash), Im just not gonna listen to that. I think thats a problem in the game and its real strange behavior from the fans.

i feel you and i'm pretty much the same way. sometimes i'll entertain these convos just cause i'm slightly curious at times but it never influences how much more i like the music. but i feel you on both sides being boring.

ironically i think the person who wrote that article is kind of on your side. the way i interpreted the angle of the article was "look since you spend 75% of your verses and interviews bytching and moaning, I'll give you some business advice onhow to sell more and then MAYBE this will make you stop bytching about not selling."

yeah, me too. and Im not partial to listening too much of what journalists say, since there havent been many good writers, interviewers, or critics in hip hop since the source fell off. then afterwards xxl paraded interscope artists shamelessly, and the internet gave random bloggers a lot of voice. and here, they had their point and gave their little advice, but the more and more artists begin to follow a formula to be like everyone else whos poppin, the more stale everything will get. a boring rapper copying mainstream rapper # x is going to get repetitive.

personally, Im not looking for a multiplatinum cross over single to get me hyped, or bumping an unknown mixtape to make me feel like Im "underground" and "real," because getting behind an artists music strictly off of their calculated image and business sense just doesnt work for me.

i agree with who ever wrote this.

the rappers who have bars or whatever always complain about Drake or whoever getting signed and getting play on radio instead of them. But even if Drake didn't exist, they still wouldn't get play.

plenty of people will have worked harder and longer than Warren Buffet. By some of you guy's logic, they should have more money than him.

it's not how hard or how long you grind. it's how smart you grind.

truth.com

rappers need to emphasis thier marketability ....this is not a cultural atmosphere anymore built on skills, it's based on a BUSINESS MODEL that thrives on contemporary NOT cultural relevance
