I've always felt like Troy really hated Asap Rocky, or at least wanted to bait him into beefing.
Let me explain, in his early interviews he was so arrogant and condescending when he went on his, "restoring the feeling/bringing the city back" monologues. It made me feel like he was trying to dismiss the achievements made by Rocky, since at the time there was a substantial amount of evidence indicating that Rocky achieved all the things that Troy Ave falsely claimed to have achieved. and I doubt that Troy was ignorant of that fact.
Add in his disdain for rappers who fit Asap Rocky's description(alternative sound/look), and it seems even more logical to conclude that one of the reasons why he regurgitated that "bringing the city back" shtick, in every interview, was to discredit and dismiss rappers like Rocky, Flatbush, and Joey Badass who were prospering before him. (Rocky being the biggest one obviously)
Personally, I think the cause for his hatred comes from a sense of entitlement rather than insecurity. I think in Troy Ave's mind he believes that he and rappers of his ilk deserve to be valued the most within the culture, because they represent the streets and nothing is of more importance than that. However, reality doesn't match his expectations(since nobody buys his music), so as a result he goes on tirades about "the dealer vs the addict", lies about Kendrick(an inferior weirdo rapper) liking his music, referencing digable planets in a patronizing way, and dismissing any contributions made by other NYC rappers that came out in this era.
In conclusion. When you look at Troy Ave's temperament from this perspective, his motives make total sense. Imo, his sense of entitlement will drive him to continue his destructive behavior. I wouldn't be surprise if a physical confrontation occurs with him and Joey Badass with Troy being the instigator, because this was all personal to him before Joey ever mentioned his name.
