Myopic post; the best and most storied characters in any medium, whether it's Achilles, King Lear, Captain Ahab, Moses, John McClane, Captain Hook, ANYONE, have definitive qualities that make them, "them." The story arch requires it so. Why make Rust, this overly misanthropic dude with an acute aversion to any stimuli (this is a man that checks his pulse regularly to ensure that he isn't) for nearly the entirety of the show, get caught up on some R.Kelly Downlow shyt? Rust has done plenty of unconventional things, but he had a certain ethos. He did those things that that were wrong for a greater good in some utilitarian vein, so he was still someone of esteemed repute. What happened tonight was akin to Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with the 10 commandments, and seeing his people worship Baal, and joining them. Lol. I say this as an agnostic. And somehow, I'm crazy for thinking that's poor writing?

Besides that, not only did Rust sleep with dude's wife, he was indignant about it. . Most men would've shot dude in "real" life.

That's just how I feel. I dislike in literature, film, etc., when the antagonist's good and redeemable qualities are replaced by hypocrisy in some egregious sense. It makes the character feel hollow and dull to me in some regard. Yes, people are like that, we have qualities that are malleable and we are constantly prioritizing and switching them up when they suit us. Moreover, we understand that real humans are infinitely complex entities, so we accept that conciously or unconciously (e.g., The Taxman is just a man). I just feel like characters in print or in whatever medium have to have some definitive and defining qualities.

You can't say "I realize humans have a wide variety of behavior and a wide spectrum of emotions" and then turn around and say fictional characters need to fit into whatever narrow scope of behavior you think is acceptable given what you think you know about them.

No. I'm not saying that. You're conflating what I'm saying, trust me. I am saying that by nature humans are incredibly complex entities, and we all accept that either consciously or unconsciously. Characters are not human. They're exactly that, "characters" -- with certain defining qualities that you can add to or abstract from, but they are discernible. Nobody is shocked when Marty kills Ledoux or beats up teenage kids, or sleeps with an ex child hooker. He's a hothead and impulsive, so all that stuff is in line with his "character." If characters were real people (i.e. non-definable), how could you ever have a legitimate story about anything? Everything would be amorphous and dialectic -- essentially melding into nothingness. Rust isn't a man, other than some archetypal inference. He's a character. Nic built him up to be Nietzche's proverbial Superman, and tonight he made him weak. He made him what Aristotle would call the incontinent man. That's my problem with the writing.

I'm not over thinking it. I kinda do this for a living and I'm a bad boy at what I do. But, like I said, some will feel me, some wont.
