This "if you ain't first your last" line of thinking is childish. There are some teams/franchises where a championship is the only way to call a season a success, but for the majority that isn't the case.

Do you think Michigan basketball had a successful season this year?

this thread has me seriously reminiscing. back in the day(when most of you guys were in diapers) when I was in college I played intramural basketball. one season in particular I was on the oddest team ever put together. my PG was 6'0" with decent handles but he couldn't shoot anywhere other than the FT line area. Dude had multiple concussions playing football in high school and had at least 2 during our season. he would get head injuries simply falling out of bed. my SG was 6'3" with range and a sweet stroke, but he could primarily only score in transition. my SF was about 6'3" he couldnt shoot or dribble he could only pass into the post. he had suffered serious brain damage from a car accident in high school and even had a severe seizure during one of our games complete with spitting up blood. My PF was 5'9". he couldnt shoot or dribble. he could only power drive to the right a max of 3/4 dribbles. I was the C at 5'10". I had lost most of my ability to jump due to severe tendinitis in both of my posterior tibial and Achilles tendons. I had and effective shooting range of about 5 ft. and had never really developed my left hand. my bench primarily included a deaf kid who only shot threes without making many.

now given the makeup of this team, the attitude some people in this thread would be that we should just be happy to be on the court. that was definitely not our attitude. I and my team had the attitude that we should play each game with the expectation to win. was it realistic? no, but that was our approach. we tried a little bit of everything. I was the only dude out there with a notebook scouting other intramural teams. I would spend hours trying to figure out how to maximize the talents of my teammates. we were soldiers. your team could be 10 times more talented than us but after the game you knew you had been in a battle with people who wanted to win more than you.

despite the fact that we lost all of our games, most by an avg of 25 points I would gladly play with that team again. I have been on state championship teams in HS, a brigade championship team at Fort Bragg and put together a post championship team in Camp Carroll, South Korea, and I would say that "losing" team was both the most frustrating and most satisfying team that I have been on. despite our lack of talent we had what I would consider to be a championship mentality.

Cool story. But by the Thread Starters logic, the season was a bust. no matter how fun it was playing or how much you improved or how you learned to play with a worse team. The whole experience was a bust and you should feel awful.

what I would argue is that while I felt awful because I HATE losing the experience wasnt a bust because of the chemistry of the team. IMO there is something to be said for experiencing leading men and having them follow you no matter what.

Everybody draft the same, Everybody can sign FAs the same. The playing field is leveled for everyone. Be great or don't but it's on you

First of all that's not true.

Secondly what does that have to do with the actual season? Draft and FA take place before the season. So you pretty much know what you have during the season and most teams don't have what it takes to win it all.

False. That mentality is how you end up like the raptors constantly fighting for the 8th spot and ending up at 9 or 10. Some teams need to realize that its important to build a formidable squad before making that push. If taking is required so be it.
