The cgi was pretty bad. Takes me out of that movie right away.
Yea I wish they used the original practical effects that they had already filmed. The studio was dumb to replace it smh. Hopefully one day a director's cut comes out with all the original footage

Is more fun to watch and the effects still look better than the cgi crap we get in 2024.

When The Thing came out in the 80s, it received really bad reviews from the so called critics, because they were expecting an alien movie like ET

The Thing 1982 always reminds me how bad the movie critics are. Because it is one of the greatest cinema films up to this day. The movie still leaves you guessing which crew characters were infected at which point of the movie. The movie effects still hold up. Those nasty scenes still look nasty. They nailed the claustrophobic feel and so did the Alien.

I'd rank The Thing above Alien and then Aliens 1986 above The Thing. As Aliens is the ultimate horror action film.

Aliens is the GOAT movie period.

But both ET and The Thing came out the same year. Bad timing.

The more I watch 'The Thing' the more I like it... It's very close between the two. I love both films for different reasons. I might change my opinion on this several times over.

One thing I can say for sure is that practical effects of the late 70's and early 80's shyt on most CGI....period

I've never seen The Thing :ohhh:

But I do know I've always liked Predator way more than Alien and like posters have said, the effects in these movies sh*t on today's CGI.

Mad respect to ALIEN, and while the Xenomorph is scary, most of the time this shyt happens because of two things...
  1. Malfunctioning/Evil Androids
  2. Weyland Yutani Interference
With the THING, at it's core... and just using the 1982 version... you don't see The Thing killing people to assimilate them; you just see the post-assimilation form. It makes you question how and when The Thing attacks, and it causes paranoia to make you question if the person next to you is real.

That’s the thing about THE Thing. No one knows what it looks like. It mutates and transforms with everybody and thing it inhabits, to the point you don’t know what you getting when it finally reveals itself. It goes from looking exactly like a human/dog to some nightmarish monstrosity. The paranoia alone is terrifying.
