congratulations, you just identified almost every President in US history. Most politicians are raging narcissists. Trump is unique only because he doesn't hide his narcissism well. Narcissistic personality disorder is a specific and acute affliction and Trump is a TEXTBOOK case of it. Someone who has NPD cannot hide it. Ask any psychologist. A perfect example of that is the Khizr Khan fiasco. He legitimately did not understand how it was a bad look. No other president would be that detached from reality.

I doubt anyone who really has NPD was ever president. Certainly not post-1900. People who are generally do shoddy work and are not high achievers. Trump is example of that. He inherited all his wealth and maintained it by using effective branding, tricking and scamming people, and using the law to his advantage and had a bunch of failures from poor planning along the way. Working your way up through government and being a policy wonk is not something they tend to excel it. They might be ambitious but they tend to not be able to accept criticism and work with others, and are too distracted by their own grandiosity to accomplish much. That's why many dictators who rise through just force and will have been narcissists. And that's why a Trump presidency would be uniquely dangerous imo. He has all the hallmarks of a dictator. In summation what he's trying to say is previous presidents may have been narcissistic but they were able to keep their narcissism in check. I can guarantee you Trump is a narcissist. You don't get to that level of success and fame by not being a pathological narcissist. What I'm saying is that in this regard, he's not that different from most of the other people who have run for President. The only difference is Trump is running at a point in time in which nakedness of the narcissism doesn't need to be downplayed as much. Previous presidents were living in a culture that shunned that behaviour, but right now we're living in a society that rewards it. Trump didn't create this culture, he's just using it to his advantage. If you look at videos of Trump before he started setting the ground for this campaign, he wasn't like this. He was a relatively inoffensive symbol of American excess and wealth, he wasn't going off on these controversial rants that people are using as the basis for this diagnosis. He was covering up his narcissism to a socially acceptable degree, just like most other narcissist. The idea that Trump is uniquely mentally ill or represents the extreme fringe of narcissistic pathology because of the way he's courting the attention of the relatively novel 24 hour news media phenomenon is bunk imo.
