The NWA pulled WCW's booking control of the NWA Championship when Flair left WCW. 2 years later, WCW withdrew from the NWA all together while Flair was champion again, but this time they kept the physical title and renamed it. So the International Heavyweight Championship was actually the NWA Heavyweight Championship with the serial numbers filed off.

But then there's shyt like....Flair was NWA Champion for like 2 months after the point WCW pulled out of the NWA. And the NWA Championship was still defended on at least a couple of WCW shows after the withdrawl. And that they had basically withdrawn in 1991, yet had tournaments for the NWA heavyweight and tag titles on WCW programming anyway.
