Some people can't properly assimilate into a society because that society and it's imposing mores/statutes/laws/etc won't let them.

How can you assimilate properly into a culture when the framework of that culture (employment wise, relationship wise, education wise) won't let you?

You need a job to live, to make money, to keep a roof over your head so you're not out on the street on W. 42nd and Broadway begging tourists for change to grab a slice of pizza at Sbarro...how is that possible when your name is what breaks you and people won't hire you because of it?

That's why there are discrimination based lawsuits based on many tenets of race, ethnicity, gender, etc...it's against basic human rights and privileges to deny someone the right to life just because said employers/parties etc can't pronounce their name. You're implying that's why everyone changed their names. There were Eastern Euros who came here and their entire names were changed because of immigration bullshyt. Same shyt happened to asians. Americans couldn't pronounce their names so to make it easier they changed it and it was out of their hands. There's a million more reasons it happens to people and besides, not everyone does it. But to answer your question, yes, sometimes to survive you do difficult things. Not saying you have to, but I don't judge people who do such actions to get ahead in society. I personally wouldn't do it, but I understand why people do such things.
