I usually know shyt like this but I'm not sure with this 1

So if I hook a PS3 to a TV
And the TV to the soundbar
Would I hear the ps3 thru the soundbar?

I also want to hear the TV/cable with the screen off
I know if I connect the cablebox directly to the soundbar I could do that
But I was trying to avoid that extra step

PS3 to the soundbar, soundbar to the TV, tune the channel to the port the soundbar is connected to.

Connect the sound bar to the tv via an optical cable

Would I be able to hear the cablebox with the TV off?
Don't think so, you'd have to connect the cable box up to the sound bar independently. I'm sure your sound bar has multiple inputs.

How are you hooking both up? Some soundbars have HDMI in and out on them Some TVs have optical out that goes to the soundbar.

It does not have hdmi in
I'm gonna run the optical from TV to soundbar
I was hoping that everything that goes to the TV comes out the soundbar
Like cablebox and ps3 without having to also connect those to the soundbar

It should work that way

You can also connect the cable box to the sound bar for tvless audio listening

PS3 HDMI to TV then TV optical out to soundbar should work fine.

Is there a reason why people have moved to using soundbars now days as opposed to receiver controlled surround sound systems
i have my 8 yrs old surround sound system on a 50 inch in the basement. upstairs i have a 65in samsung that has shytty sound depending on the input (yesterday we had it on 100 for a comcast hbo show)
i'm going get something soon just wondering if soundbars have some advantage (is it just aesthetics?)

I know a lot of people dont even use surround sound and one advantage of a soundbar besides its size is a clear sound at low volume

me I still use my Z-5500

For me, it's the cleaner look

With these new slim tvs there's no space to put speakers in them so the sound is always lacking

I got my mom's a TV last black Friday
The volume goes from 0-100 but the volume sounds the same from 50-100
And at 50 it sounds like that should be 20
