Twitter has only 49 black employees, and its employment numbers for most other minority groups are no better, according to its latest Equal Employment Opportunity report.

The names of every black employee at Twitter could fit into a few tweets.

The technolgy company has only 49 black employees in an American workforce of 2,910, according to the company’s 2014 Equal Employment Opportunity report.

Across the board, its employment of most minorities deserves a #dismal hashtag — whites and Asians comprise 93.8% of Twitter’s workforce, with all other ethnicities represented by only a few dozen employees, if that.

This comes after the company's vice president of diversity and inclusion declared in a blog post last summer that Twitter was "making diversity an important business issue for ourselves."

Ironically, black users dominate the medium itself — 27% of black adults use Twitter, compared to 21% of white adults, according to the Pew Research Center. In 2015 especially, Twitter has proven an essential tool for the “Black Lives Matter” movement and the promotion of causes and demonstrations tied to it.

The company’s diversity stats have already drawn outrage from one black leader.

“I am very disappointed,” the Rev. Jesse Jackson told the Guardian on Wednesday.

“Black people are greater users of the product and capable of doing the jobs, but there has not been an adequate commitment to hire, train and maintain (them).”

He added: “They hire people they know, they trust and like. We’re not in that the circle.”

Those numbers also put Twitter in line with fellow social media giant Facebook, where blacks comprise just 2% of the workforce as of this year. Google, too, shares that percentage.

Facebook barely beats Twitter’s toll of black employees — thanks to seven black hires out of 1,231 new employees in 2013, according to its latest EEO filing.

Twitter’s stats also show a striking gender imbalance, with men making up 70% of its workforce.

A Twitter spokesperson said the 2015 employee diversity report will be released by the end of the year.

Lack of diversity within the tech industry is still a blatant issue, but especially glaring is the scarcity of black women. Using data from a 2014 Equal Employment Opportunity report, the Verge put together a graph last month breaking down the racial diversity of some of tech’s biggest companies, such as Google, Facebook. Apple and Twitter.

As reported by Complex, the Verge’s graph showed Amazon at the most with 7 percent. Apple was at 3 percent while Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Intel each had one percent. Then there was Twitter, down at the bottom with an alarming zero percent. While that doesn’t mean there were absolutely no black women on staff, they had a total of only 14—out of 3000 employees. Once you factor black men in, it goes up to 2 percent.

What’s Black Twitter got to say about this?

How many blacks are in nascent web technologies to begin with ? I look around at my job and I'm one of maybe 4 blacks in my department. One of three black engineers.

Not called the talented tenth for nothing. I'd be surprised if Indians and Asians weren't over represented

Not this thread again.

For the umpteenth time, the average White person is NOT tripping over himself/herself to interact with Black people. This applies to all facets of life i.e relationships, work, etc. They have no incentive to do so. Do you then think the people with the ability to make moves are going to be tripping over themselves to work with Black people? As always, rather than beg for integration, Black people should put more effort into building our own things. But nope, folks would rather complain about lack of diversity. :snoop:

I think more than 10 percent of Black people are qualified to work for Twitter. I think the concept of talented tenth is vile racist/white supremacy garbage. I think that Black people make the most out of opportunities. Marva Collins has proven time and time again that you don't have to be a special snoflake to be educated or have a good job.

Question I always ask is are we applying for roles, in STEM courses, or positions to be hired? How many interview positions do we go for seems like a more interesting element.

I think most times it's easy to look at these stats but forgot that initial question. Is it even bad if that's the percentage? Are we owed to be in the majority of employees there?

I have never liked these types of articles as it seems as if we are owed some shyt. Just sounds like we are begging

News flash: people gravitate towards things that are popular. Marketing 101. The average person does not know, and most likely does not care about Twitter's employment demographics; all that matters is their popular end product.
