2 things:

1 - Y'all mentioning cac hipsters and culture vultures. Tyler NOT ONCE mentioned them.

2 - Like what @My Girl is Bow Legged mentioned: nobody knows who is just mentioning shyt for validation/pandering or not. Most people on the internet is lying at least half the time anyways, now we gonna single out people on the net talking about Hip Hop?

Bottom line is peolples lists are going to be similar because most people are going to list the artists and works of art that shaped the culture the most. Like any other genre of music...or any other thing for that matter.

Like I said, you can often tell because they have no actual remotely unique opinions or depth in knowledge. If I asked you right now to tell me why you like OB4CL, you can give me reasons and compare it to other Wu Albums. Because you ACTUALLY like it.

It's almost like how someone can say Mike Tyson is their GOAT and you can tell if they know Boxing and like him or if they're just giving a generic answer.

And no, Hip Hop is like decades old and is always changing constantly. It can't really be compared to other genres and other forms and media imo because it changes at such a fast pace and is so centred on the youth. There's always gonna be consensus classics and albums that are timeless but still.

The top 10 list of the average 15 year old is not going to be same as a 35 year old or 45 year old even if there are some overlaps and anomalies. Some of you just like to pretend that it is because it artificially boosts some of the GOATs legacy a bit.

The way I look at it, in the age of the internet, this is a pretty silly argument
Back in the day, your folk had to have old records lying about
or an OG put you on to an artist
Now streaming/subscription services are literally catered around curation and discovery.
but hey whatever

You say this but the average person has minimal interest in going through Artists whole discogs. Alot barely even listen to new albums in entirety let alone going to listen to something that they probably find dated asf.

:youngsabo: too many people trying to look "educated" and give the "best choice" instead of talking about shyt that resonates with them. Treating sports and film, the same way. Too much ranking albums w/ each other instead of talking about what this album good, bad, etc. It's not that confusing, but some nikkas thread salty.

illmatic a great album, but I played that Maad City Album front and back for month, that album means more to me. Somebody might personally resonate w/ illmatic, and that's okay. Let's talk about it.

It's nuts. nikkas in the Coliseum had like a 20 page thread arguing about how Jokic's playoff run was more valid than Lebron's

Based on himself. How he entered the game and how he makes a mockery of anything that’s considered hiphop.
based on himself :what:his mentor is Pharrell and he chose to have his last album hosted by DJ Drama, do you think that’s because he was trying to mock hip hop?

He made a damn good point about the top 10 lists

I find myself even here on this board much more fascinated by WHY someone would find a song an album or an artist dope than knowing where they rank them historically.
Would make for a cool thread. my top 10 list and albums i hate would drive people INSANE on here (e.g. I hate supreme clientele outside of three songs)

It is nasty in Film. :mjlol:

Yuuuup. Especially in genre film. Jordan Peele addressed this last year when twitter nerds were trying to hail him as the greatest horror director of all time, based off Rotten Tomatoes scores. He had to shut that down like yo...who gives a fukk about lists and which critics liked which film more, what matters is whether it's a good film or not.

I feel the same way about music and film: if someone can't name me something that they personally enjoy that didn't get critical acclaim, I find them suspect. For instance I love Paul Schrader's The Comfort Of Strangers. It's at like 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Who gives a fukk, it's a great film. Album wise I looove Mos Def's True Magic album, which got trashed by critics. It's dope to me, who cares if people say it's bad?

Lists breed conformity. Obviously I understand certain names are inevitably gonna be on a "best rapper" or "best rap album" list but if you don't have anything on there that makes me say "oh interesting" why am I reading your list? It's just dikk stroking at one point. For instance with MF DOOM I'm probably gonna put the Viktor Vaughn album ahead of Madvillainy. My list fluctuates but I probably like that album more than Madvillainy on more days of the year. That would be sacrilege to LIST NERDS but fukk em. I love both albums.

He’s right and not everybody does this but you can tell when somebody is saying a list they think they’re supposed to say instead of saying what they actually feel.

If you’re 16 years old and me against the world, death certificate, ready to die, and the chronic are GENUINELY your favorite albums then cool. But don’t say them albums if that’s not what you really feel

Tyler the creator isn’t hiphop. I know that will bother a lot of people.

i mean.... he cried about getting the rap grammy that he was different and mad about being put in a box, so if people gonna be mad they can be mad at him.

but let's face it, in reality he is because hip hop is variety. he's from cali where there is no one hip hop sound so he should know best. and then you have sounds like beastie boys so and other white boy shyt like eminem so if he thinks he special just because he draws a diverse hip hop crowd.... he isn't. then even more recent you had guys like ye making the more emo lighthearted music so... he aint special cuz he makes melodic songs with charlie wilson.

tldr: he's very hip hop lol

Y'all are refusing to see the point because of your biases:snoop:

There is a 16 year old out there that legitimately loves Illmatic. That's great. Where y'all keep getting finessed is the fact that that ain't most 16 year olds, and out of the 10 16 year olds that say they love Illmatic, 8 of them are fukkin lying breh:mjlol:

Why do they lie? Because again hipsters invoke classic works to try to impress people. It makes them look like they have sophisticated and varied taste.

This is how white hipsters gain space in hip hop then turn around and act like authorities in the space. Because y'all let the white girl in with open arms because she says Madvilliany is her favorite album and old nikkas get :gladbron: . Chuck D did this shyt years ago caping for a white bytch that curated a hip hop exhibit

If y'all could look past your biases you would see the game that's being played :francis:
I don’t see the harm in casuals parroting that Illmatic is the GOAT album. Obviously casuals masquerading as authorities is problematic, but that is a different subject.

I'm just having a hard time grasping who gives a fukk if some kid is "lying" by saying illmatic is their favorite album. cause how do you know they're lying?

I know a young breh who said nas was his favorite rapper of all time and he wasn't even born when illmatic dropped. he hated on newer rappers and I used to clown him for it but he's still a nas stan to this day. wasn't nothin fake about it and he def wasn't trying to impress us

I really don't give a shyt about what cacs think tho, if that's where this convo is goin yall can have it
I give a shyt about what truly knowledgeable heads of all races have to say. At the end of the day, that’s a big part of the reason why we are all here.
